I\'ve been and looked, and Eurodicautom has at least the merit of agreeing with me in one instance, the one I believe to be most likely, given the context, hence the word first mentioned above.

As far as I am aware, \"slug\" and \"billet\" refer more specifically to workpieces intended to be reshaped in some way (forging, extruding) while \"blank\" and possibly \"stock\" may (also) be used in reference to workpieces to be machined (cut, drilled, milled, etc.).
