Rachel Fell: 9:30pm Dec 17, 2006: Sorry, meant to offer that too! - Pectin, for example, which "...epaissit la couche peripherique du contenu intestinal (couche non agitee)..." and the term "non agitee" (sorry no accents, etc.) is used later in inverted commas - saw it on the net but not an English term

unstirred water layer
Erklärung:
Refers to physical layer of fluid in the small intestine that is a barrier to absorption. The pectin or certain fibres are hypothesized to increased its thickness and thereby retard transit and absorption.
The references are quite clear but I have not encountered it before. But then I am not specialized in that area of pharmacology & physiology research.

Fragesteller: Thank you Michael - I wouldn't have though "stirred" would come into it but I see it does!

Zustimmung blavatsky: The surface of the cells on the microvilli are covered with a brush border of proteins which helps to catch a molecule-thin layer of water within itself. This layer, called the "unstirred water layer," has a number of functions in absorption of nutrients.
