Französisch Begriff oder Satz: chassé-croisé
In a description of "The Coronation of Poppea" (L'Incoronazione di Poppea), which Wikipedia says has some "steamy love scenes" ! Much bed-hopping between Emperor Nero, wives, mistresses and various lovers, described in my text as "un charmant et douteux chassé-croisé".
Any ideas for the "chassé-croisé"? Many thanks.

Zustimmung MatthewLaSon: I like this. Not a fan of the "carrying on", "frolic", "romping" idea. The French is simply saying the "comings and goings" of people, not what they may imply. I said "comings to and fro". I wouldn't stray too far from the literal French meaning.

Erklärung:
Collins-Robert: "to-ing and fro-ing" or moving "to and fro". "Bed-hopping" or "sleeping around" could work, too, depending on the register of the text. Collins-Robert also says "chassés-croisés" (French and English) is a dance set to partners, so perhaps you could leave it as is.

I like this since it has a bit of a literary flavor to it with "to and fro", as opposed to saying simply "comings and goings".


comings to and fro, both charming and suspect.

It's charming to see all these people coming and going all day long from wherever, but it also has a suspect nature to it (what are they doing in there?).

By the way, I would not deviate too far from the literal meaing here.
Think of a holiday travel (chassés-croisés) to get a better idea of what the French is truly saying.
