Übersetzungen Französisch > Englisch [PRO] Art/Literary - Musik | | Französisch Begriff oder Satz: arrangeur et orchestrateur | Is this "orchestrator" or "composer"?
I'm inclined to use "orchestrator", but when I look at various sites that speak of "arrangers and....", it's usually followed by "composer". The Oxford English Dictionary states that an "orchestrator" arranges, scores or composes, so he does a bit more than a composer....I just need confirmation, thanks! |

An orchestrator takes music that is already written (could be written by themself) and translates it to be played by an orchestra - usually an orchestra using classical instruments. An arranger does the same thing, but the word is used with bands and other less classical contexts. Orchestra, in this context, usually implies the ability to write for strings. Arranger can also apply to a singer's arrangement, which would not be included in orchestration.

In film writing, orchestrators are very often used. Since the score must be prepared very rapidly, the composer simply doesn't have enough time to do all the work alone. Orchestration is very time-consuming, without necessarily being creative.

With a little imagination, orchestrator is to composer as translator is to writer.
A composer such as Beethoven orchestrated all his own music, but the orchestration was only part of the compositional process, a part that is both extremely technical as well as being more or less creative. Traditionally a composer will study harmony, counterpoint & orchestration. |
