how about
"let's not be shy about quoting..." celandine (asker): 7:19am Feb 25, 2005: leonid - I think this is usually translated as "Every cloud has a silver lining" but it was the intro part of the phrase that was bugging me celandine (asker): 7:20am Feb 25, 2005: david - I like that ! Leonid Gornik: 5:39pm Feb 25, 2005: Silver lining was the first thing I thought about, but this is not exactly it! - NancyLynn: 5:42pm Feb 25, 2005: I'd go with silver lining :-) - xxxdf49f: 5:51pm Feb 25, 2005: agree with you and Nancy, nothing else but "...silver lining"! :-) -

| | If you'll pardon the cliché, ... | Erklärung: I know it doesn't say what the French says, but it is a common lead-in to a hackneyed expression.
That's just given me another thought. How about:
"I know this is a hackneyed expression, but [proverb]" |

| let's venture to quote the proverb.....
Erklärung: Here are some versions for the first part of the sentence "Allez, osons le proverbe":
-OK, LET'S QUOTE THE/(this) PROVERB....
-OK, I'D USE THE/(this) PROVERB...
-OK, IF I MAY QUOTE THE/(this) PROVERB...
-OK, LET'S VENTURE TO QUOTE THE/(this) PROVERB....
-OK, LET'S DARE TO QUOTE THE (this) PROVERB....
I'd translate "Allez" as "ok", maybe "c'mon", but I don't know if the latter is appropriate to your context...
Just giving you my 2-cent-opinion :) And the variations can be even more! Hope these help!
