Erklärung:
Just as an alternative which, arguably, sounds a little more natural.
I don't think it could be argued that a minor modification would apply to anything other than a detail of the invention..

Zustimmung Tony M: In layman's language, I'd agree entirely that this sounds more natural; however, I have an inkling that this is to some extent a particular 'specialist term', so probably safest to check first...
