I need to translate the following quote by Emile M. Cioran, a Romanian philosopher. I have tried to get my hands on the English translation of his book "La tentation d'exister" (1956), but to no avail. Does any one know for certain how this was translated and published in English?

"Je me détruis, je le veux bien; en attendant dans ce climat d'asthme que créent les convictions, dans un monde d'oppressés, je respire; je respire à ma façon".

I think I prefer the other translations, but I give this as how the phrase was rendered in the 1998 English translation by Richard Howard (The Temptation to Exist, University of Chicago Press - see amazon link below).

The whole letter is reproduced on someone's blog (see other link below), taken from this translation, and the sentence reads:

"I am destroying myself, certainly; meanwhile, in this asthmatic climate that convictions create in a world of oppressed men, I breathe; I breathe in my fashion."

Sometimes if the standard English translation doesn't work in the context I give all the details of the English translation but note 'translation modified', though it depends a bit on the context whether that would be appropriate or not.

This is my understanding of "climat d'asthme" in this context.

An atmosphere which prevents one from "mentally/emotionally breathing well." It's downright repressive.

You could say "atmosphere", but I prefer "environment."
