Übersetzungen Französisch > Englisch [PRO] Social Sciences - Religion / Profession on a birth certificate (Cameroon) | | Französisch Begriff oder Satz: Marché-Goy | This is part of a birth certificate from Cameroon and filled in under the father's profession.
The only Google reference I was able to find is the following:
D'après le numéro que le Monde de la Bible consacre à Paul de Tarse, l'effort premier d'évangélisation portait sur le monde juif, et c'est pour se débarrasser de Paul qu'on lui a concédé les Goyim, non comme on fait un cadeau, mais comme on file une patate chaude.
Cependant les deux ne sont pas inconciliables : au début, on ne songe pas au marché goy, puis on se tourne vers lui, et alors, on adapte le message pour ces goyim.
(on what seems to be a discussion forum for discussions between believers and atheists)
Any ideas on what kind of a profession this might be or if it would be best to keep it in the original would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Tanja

| Notiz(en) an den/des Fragesteller(s)Rita Heller: 11:33pm Nov 15, 2005: what city? - Philippe Boucry: 6:20am Nov 16, 2005: It's best to keep it in the original. The presence of the hyphen indicates this is an area, or a district, not a market as such (although the name of the area may of course be derived from a market). - Philippe Boucry: 6:36am Nov 16, 2005: The hyphen makes this a proper noun: "Marché-Goy" is not the same thing as "marché Goy". - Philippe Boucry: 8:23am Nov 16, 2005: Can't find Marché-Goy anywhere but this site from the mighty CIA shows that because of the hypen, Pointe-Noire (Rep of the Congo) has not been translated into something like Black Point or whatever:http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/reference_ma - xxxJGTFLI (asker): 4:38pm Nov 16, 2005: Clarifications - Rita, the child's birth place is Mahohi. The certificate was issued in Babimbi. I have not been able to find any evidence of a city in Cameroon with the name of "Goy". I also find it a bit strange that they would list a place under the father's profession. On the other hand, the (now grown) child is an evangelical preacher according to the marriage certificate which is why I didn't immediately reject the Google reference - maybe it runs in the family? In any case, I will probably leave it in the original on the translation. Thanks for all the help so far! Rita Heller: 4:46pm Nov 16, 2005: http://www.go4travel.com/Country/Cameroon/Cameroon-(general).htm
the town is Goye - and working the central marketplace or having a stand in the open market sounds very plausible for Africa. The Hebrew "goy" means a non-Hebrew - Jane Lamb-Ruiz: 7:03pm Nov 16, 2005: you should reject google goy out of hand. It is Utterly Ridiculous and has nothing whatsoever to do with Preaching...and now Rita has actually found the town. -

| | Goy Market | Erklärung: It's obviously the name fo the market in Cameroon.
It is not Goy from the Hebrew which means a Gentile. That is what some Jews use to refer to Christians. It has nothing to do with the Cameroon market!!
