Sport/Fitness/Erholung / VTT - all terrain bike touring/hiking | | Französisch Begriff oder Satz: boucle communale | I am sure someone is going to know this one right away. Is the distinction they are making this:
that you can either do the entire 17 km and take in all the villages or just go round particular villages of your choice which will only take you 1-2 hours? Not quite sure. If I am right, would I have to paraphrase it, or is there a translation of the term ... ? Ccan't really think of one right now as I've spent too long investigating storks' nests atop fortifications in a previous question and I'm exhausted!

And then they say you can do the lot in one go or you can do it one village at a time - no more, no less : as a complete circuit or as 6 separate circuits, one village at a time......
You will call me patronising but this is about appealing to the reader and therefore talking a language he can easily understand. It has nothing to do with literary translation. Just a tip - à prendre ou à laisser

Tony's answer is totally TO the point...isn't it? And so are the other two answers. Precisely WHO has missed the point? And what has literary translation got to do with it here? There is no literary angle, and none was suggested....My question was simply whether 'boucle communale' did in fact mean going round the villages individually... isn't that what I ask, and isn't that what the answerers address? I just wondered whether there was an equivalent term in English in hiking/cycling... and in fact GWC - Claire has made just such a suggestion. Sorry, I really don't understand your 'literary translation' comment - which I think possibly belongs to one of my other questions - and definitely not this one.

I know, we've lost the 'round' meaning, but it gets a (very) few English ghits!
Other words 'path' 'footpath ,ramble'. Don't know if 'short distance footpath' exists? Just checked - yes in France and Catalonia.

Community Circuits
Community Circuits are circular routes, typically of length between five and fifteen miles. They will be of enormous benefit to local horse riders, as well as walkers and cyclists, who wish to enjoy leisure time in the country and to benefit from physical exercise. And they ensure that people can get off the roads. Community Circuits can be developed by parish, district and county councils; local bridleways associations and riding clubs; and of course, by other interested groups. They will be identified by locally chosen signage.

Here is another reference that I found, also British, which includes the phrase complete circuit.
The Trust's priorities for route opening are:
* To complete the Hertfordshire part of the H25 London Orbital Bridleroute
* To complete the community circuits planned by The British Horse Society and Hertsmere Borough Council
* To develop community circuit plans for neighbouring districts in Hertfordshire
By 'Community Circuit', we mean circular riding routes up to about 10 to 15 miles long. Using multiple adjoining community circuits should allow people to form rides of different lengths. This is the concept promoted by the Ride UK project.
