German term or phrase: Vorschaltgruppe
From a list of transmission parts:

7.2 Vorschaltgruppe
7.3 Nachschaltgruppe
7.4 Zwischengetriebe
7.5 Nebenab- und Nebenantriebe
7.6 Ausgleichsgetriebe

Bonus points for anyone who can guess and answer my next querstion(s) in advance ;-) or who can point me at a good online motor vehicle glossary - this really isn't my specialist area (it's from an insurance policy).

splitter drive / splitter group
Explanation:
Not really my area either but so says Langenscheidt Technik (CD version):
Vorschaltgruppe f <nfz> (Schaltgetriebe) splitter group; splitter drive

Same source for:
Nachschaltgruppe = range-change group / range change
Nebenab- und Nebenantriebe = power take-offs (PTOs) and auxiliary drives
Ausgleichsgetriebe = differential (gear)

Zwischengetriebe might be intermediate gear or transfer box but I'm not too sure.

http://peter.kutschera.at/lr/LandRoverDict.pl might help but is "mit Vorsicht zu genießen" (regionalisms etc.).

Thanks. This one isn't easy to decide on, as Frank's second ["more precise" ;-) ] answer is also supported by evidence, buit given that "retarder" was a separate entry in my list I've gine for Steffen's answer here.

Oh yes, by the way...: http://www.freshpatents.com/Six-gear-or-seven-gear-selector-transmission-for-motor-vehicle-dt20040819ptan20040162180.php

agree  Frosty: Splitter box, yes. And it looks like Scania have modified the basic Voith retarder (Patent lapsed?). Maybe it no longer overheats!!!
