Both WBs that I cited call \"Schuldbeitritt\" \"Schuldmituebenahme\" My Deustches Rechtslexikon vom Beck Verlag calls it \"Schulduebernahme\" and states: \"Schulduernahme ist der Uebergang einer schuldrechtlichen Verbindlichkeit auf einen an dem Schuldvehaeltnis nicht beteiligten Dritten.\" There is more that I will give you if you need it.

Schuldbeitritt and Schuldmituebernahme appear to be synonymous (according to both Dietl and Romain). My Deutsches Rechstlexikon from Beck Verlag defines \"Schulduebernahme\" (another synonym) as follows: \"Schulduebernahme ist der Uebrgange einer schuldrechtlichen Verbindlichkeit auf einen an dem Schuldverhaeltnis nicht beteiligten Dritten.\" There is more that I will give you if you need it.

becoming a co-debtor

Explanation:
There might be a better expression, though, I can't remember one now. Essentially, it is that the comfort letter does not mean unrestricted liability: neither for debt nor for recourse claims.

Given Eva's comment, I suggest you wait before closing this one - I just looked this up, so I cannot tell you whether it really fits your context.

You may wish to change the subject area to "Legal" - I guess there's more expertise regarding this query.
