Deutsch Begriff oder Satz: 6. Klasse
"Das Schulsystem in den ländlichen Gegenden wird vernachlässigt und die Infrastruktur ist in einem miserablen Zustand. Das Bildungssystem wird wenig gefördert und damit vergrössert sich der Analphabetismus. Viele der Schüler und Schülerinnen verlassen nach der 6. Klasse die Schule, um als Handlanger oder Hausangestellte zu arbeiten."

Robert Kleemaier (asker): 10:29pm Feb 9, 2004: omission - Sorry, folks; a bit too quick off the draw. Just need a quick reminder whether this term is the equivalent of "Grade 6" in the US/Canada. I know there's a two year difference between the Netherlands and here, but I'm running out of time...
Eckhard Boehle: 11:04pm Feb 9, 2004: Is this text talking about Germany? After the "6. Klasse" normally nobody leaves school because of "Schulpflicht" (compulsory school attendance), leaving school after 10 grades doesn't mean working as labourer or domestic servant! Sounds like outside EU. -
Robert Kleemaier (asker): 11:11pm Feb 9, 2004: Dear Eckhard - Indeed, this text is all about a Latin American country and a foundations attempt to improve the lives of the inhabitants of a hamlet. I have lived in Germany before and know this does not apply to the FRG.

Zustimmung Eckhard Boehle: So, after Robert's explanation that this text is about Latin America - this is the answer. Or what do the Latin Americans say?

Zustimmung Kim Metzger: It wouldn't be unusual for children to leave school after the sixth grade in Mexico.

Zustimmung Brandis: they then go to a secondary school.

Zustimmung matias: hm ... sounds reasonable after Robert's explaination, if children leave school after 15, it is not that an issue.

10th Grade, Grade 10

Erklärung:
If this is the German-speaking world you are talking about the sixth grade of secondary school (Mittelschule).
In NA this is termed "dropping out".

Greetings to BC, Robert (from a former Ontarian).
At least here in Austria (I believe Germany is the same), elementary (Grund/Volksschule) lasts four years/grades, secondary school (Mittelschule) begins with one again. 6 +4 = 10 (as far as I can remember...)

in the USA, after 5 years and 5 grades of Elementary School. I am basing this on my grandson's attending now the first grade of Middle School in Louisiana.

I might need to add that in my native Switzerland, 6th grade was still Elementary School i.e. Primarschule. Nobody can quit after that. The minimum is still a 7th and 8th school year.

Neutraler Kommentar Kim Metzger: No such thing as "first grade of middle school" in the US education system. It's K to 12. Maybe you're thinking of "first year of middle school."

Erklärung:
you could maybe put it this way to avoid the "grade"issue while still pointing to the low level of education they are receiving
