Jonathan MacKerron: 6:05pm Jul 4, 2007: nearly impossible to say without more context to go on
xxxFrancis Lee: 6:06pm Jul 4, 2007: Please give us some context and/or your own thoughts. Sorry, but this (5 questions, zero input) is tending towards the ridiculous ...
kalimeh: 6:22pm Jul 4, 2007: more input as requested -
xxxFrancis Lee: 6:28pm Jul 4, 2007: A classic case of context/readership being crucial. Even in the Guardian newspaper I could imagine a columnist saying "take the p*ss out of xx". What do you say??
kalimeh: 6:36pm Jul 4, 2007: I just posted more input - Not sure what you are asking me now? I could easily explain to someone what "take the p*ss" meant. Couldn't you?
xxxCMJ_Trans: 8:09pm Jul 4, 2007: having just read the above I think you have taken offence where none was intended. Where is the "more input" you state you have posted, that si the question? Perhaps the question of your mother tongue arose from your NAME? This is not a battlefield
kalimeh: 8:20pm Jul 4, 2007: more input - I spent ages typing up (as my doc won't allow cut and paste) more input - but all that was posted was the title unfortunately! I cannot face re-typing again.
I think it is offensive for another poster to question someone's native-speaker status. How else can that be taken, except as an insult? I do not presume for example that your first name is CMJ Trans, so why should mine be kalimeh. It is the name of my translation agency. My first name is Jeannie! I just wanted help with a few terms and I ended up being patronised and insulted - I think the tone Francis Lee used was insulting - aside from the native speaker issue his tone was aggressive. I just want to get on with my translation, but feel extremely hurt by his comments and style of answering.
xxxFrancis Lee: 8:52pm Jul 4, 2007: No offense intended. My skepticism was based purely on your own comments as they stand. But where is the "posted more input"??
SusieZ: 8:57pm Jul 4, 2007: "....speaking words of wisdom, let it be...."
Steffen Walter: 7:36am Jul 5, 2007: Coming back to purely linguistic/content-based comments, please bear in mind that the complete idiomatic expression is "aufs Korn nehmen". I've changed the term headline and field ("Idioms") accordingly.

lampoon
Erklärung:
aufs Korn nehmen is ridicule in a good natured way. Ridicule therefore does not really do it for me.
Imo, to lampoon, is the better expression, which incorporates the harmless fun aspect.

would "tar and feather" work for you here?

My Austrian husband insists this term originally comes from hunting in terms of "target" "watch closely". I'm familiar with it in terms of attacking in ridicule.
I found this explanation on google:
jmdn., etwas (scharf) kritisieren; jemdn. genau beobachten und mit Spott und Witz heftig kritisieren. - Die Wendung bezieht sich auf das Zielen ueber Kimme und Korn bei einer Schusswaffe.

I guess it depends on the context.

Neutraler Kommentar xxxFrancis Lee: Probably doesn't work here. At best the dict. definition .../ I dunno - it's just a feeling that this wouldn't be the natural choice ...

-> Well, what would you suggest? I see it as a more negative implication, which would be ridicule...

I'd suggest a non-tragical definition here.
