I'm pretty sure this is an idiom but what does it mean?
Vor dem Ufer ankerten Segler und Dampfschiffe auf Reede, bereit beladen zu werden für den Transport in die ganze Welt. Viele ehemalige Sklaven arbeiteten auch nach der Revolution auf den Zuckerrohrfeldern. Die Arbeit war nicht leichter geworden, aber wenigstens war man *aus freien Stücken geblieben*.
