Niamh Piel (asker): 13:55 Jul 4, 2005: Sphinkter-interus-Barre, Sphinkter-internus-Barre - Thanks, Edith. You're right, it must be internus. The report here does have interus but of course it must be a typing error.

I'm not a medical specialist, but maybe this information will help.
According to this info, Internus-Barre is Blasenhalssklerose, which Roche translates as sclerosis of the bladder neck. Another source below says the internal sphincter is also known as the mediate bladder neck.

Neurogenic Bladder
The normally functioning urinary bladder stores from 350 to 500 ml of urine without a substantial rise in intravesicular pressure and then empties completely on demand. The detrusor muscle of the bladder contracts during urination and this opens up the bladder neck area as well as the smooth muscle of the proximal urethra to form a "facilitating funnel". The internal sphincter, consisting of a smooth muscle of the bladder neck which is contiguous with the urethral smooth muscle, comprises the primary continence mechanism.

Sympathetic alpha-adrenoreceptor nerves (also via the hypogastric nerve) originating from the same spinal segments mediate bladder neck (sometimes called internal sphincter) closure. Somatic nerves from S2-4 travelling through the pudendal nerve keep the external urinary sphincter closed.

Guillian-Barre disease

Bladder Neck Dysfunction
This occurs in young and middle aged men with longstanding voiding and storage symptoms. Videourodynamics shows BOO localised at the BN, secondary DI may result and striated sphincter may be dyssynergic resulting in 'trapped prostate'. Treatment includes BNI ±
small TURP.
