Trials cannot be carried out in children unless it is expected that satisfactory findings will not be obtained from trials in adults:
Die klinische Prüfung an Erwachsenen darf nach den Erkenntnissen der medizinischen Wissenschaft keine ausreichenden Prüfergebnisse erwarten lassen.

This seems to be taken from Art. 40 Para. 4 of the AMG.

according to medical knowledge
Explanation:
- if you would like to consider the "official" English version of AMG:

(see page 73)

If I had not seen this text, I would have suggested
"according to current medical knowledge" or "current state of medical science", but IMO the wording of our Bundesministerium für Gesundheit will work for your translation.

Thanks for providing the link to the English version of the AMG, and for suggesting including 'current' in the translation of the phrase.
I did use the 'based on' suggested by Sarah instead of 'according to'.

A slight change to the previous sentence: Based on the findings of medical science, sufficient test results cannot be expected from the clinical test on adults or: the clinical test on adults cannot be expected to provide/render/generate sufficient results.

Of course it should be: provide/render/generate sufficient *test* results.
