I am a biology student and can tell you the following: There is an uterine and a luteal cycle. The corpus luteum gives the luteal phase the name, and is responsible for the production of estrogen and progesterone. Should the corpus luteum degenerate, the hormone levels will drop drastically and initiate menstruation.
