Angina pectoris is the result of myocardial ischemia caused by an imbalance between myocardial blood supply and oxygen demand. Nitrates by their action reduce myocardial oxygen consumption and can also increase coronary artery blood flow and are platelet inhibitors. Depending on the situation, nitroglycerin can be administered sublingually (beneath the tongue) for relief. Side effects however include hypersensitivity to nitroglycerin, which may result in nitroglycerin-induced hypotension.
