Ich war im Block B, Abschnitt 3, in der Naehe vom Zigeunerlager. Ich musste da Appellstehen und als "Krankenschwester" arbeiten.

While living in the concentration camp, the days were very regimented, with a rigorous schedule of meals, work, and roll call.

Both Grete Salus and Lucie Begov describe the roll call at Auschwitz as a brutal ritual whose memory continues to traumatize survivors. During the roll calls, the prisoners had to stand outside, exposed in their light clothing to the weather and to the random brutalities of their tormentors, for hours on end.

Erklärung:
While "roll call" certainly works, Appellstehen means to "stand in formation". This could be for a roll call or headcount, to issue instructions, in preparation for a movement, or in your case - simply to make the prisoners stand outside for long periods of time doing nothing.
