Deutsch Begriff oder Satz: Die allfällige Schere im Kopf
This is from an interview with the head of a design agency to be published on a design website. When asked about advice for young designers, the answer is: "Die allfällige Schere im Kopf so lange wie möglich zu ignorieren und den unbedingten Willen behalten, Neues zu schaffen." Ignore the scissors in your head??? Or can Schere mean worries in the sense of scheren? Any help appreciated.

the censor / self-censor / (iro.) auto-censor that might be lurking in one's head
Erklärung:
"Schere im Kopf": googling it yields contexts sth. like 'internalised censor', knee-jerk self-censorship, timidity/exaggerated pol. correctness, etc.

Widerspruch TonyTK: Sorry, sci-trans, this doesn't work in English. The only hits on non-German sites are by Swiss/Germans living abroad. In the UK, this would mean real scissors in a real head - Glasgow on a Saturday night.

Hinweise an den Beantworter der Frage
Fragesteller: Ah, I googled on "allfaellige schere" but not "schere im kopf", so I think you probably have it.

Zustimmung Ingeborg Gowans: yes, I was mulling over this term, as well; this makes a lot more sense with the idea that you should be creating new things and free yourself of restrictive ideas.

-> Thx, Ingeborg; there's a phrase on the tip of my tongue - cf. Rotstift...

Zustimmung BrigitteHilgner: I was wondering how to get this across in English - this looks like a good solution to me.

-> Danke, Brigitte, und danke, Henry. I think I've got tip-o'-tongue blockage...

Zustimmung Henry Schroeder: Certainly something with "censor", though I don't know what would sound best, perhaps the phrase will come off the tip of your tongue - it certainly won't come off mine.

Neutraler Kommentar sylvie malich: Note to Stephen: NOT blue pencil for designers! (C: This is used on print-ready proofs because blue is not picked up by film, but what am I saying, you prob. already know this.

-> Thanks, Sylive, point taken. And no, I didn't know. I was hovering over red pencil, too, which may be more GB. (presumably extra detectable on those proofing films too)
