I've encountered this term plenty of times, and usually I can translate it as focal length or focal distance - but in this case, what they're describing (judging by the less sharply focused background) seems to be a shallow depth of focus, which would be obtained by using a large aperture size - could Brennweite have a different meaning in this context?

Erklärung:
The source text is not very clear. In protrait photography it preferred to have to subject in clear focus, with an out of focus background. One way to accomplish this is to select a LENS with a greater focal lenhth (laengere Brennweite), also called a portrait lense, like 75 to 100 mm instead of 50 mm. This also produces better facial proportions, since the camera is further away from the subject. Another way to acomplish similar results is to open the aperture (Blende)of a 50 mm lens several F stops, compensated by higher shutter speed, which reduces the (Tiefenscharfe), but produces a slightly bigger nose, resulting from the closer distance to the subject.

Zustimmung Endre Both: Perfect explanation, but why is the source unclear? "Große Brennweite" (ellipsis of "Objektiv mit großer Brennweite") is just what you describe, "lens with a larger focal length" :-).
