Social Sciences - Religion | | Deutsch Begriff oder Satz: freikirchlich | I am looking for the right term in English for "freikirchlich", as in "freikirchliche Gemeinde", "freikirchlicher Vertreter" etc. Am I right in thinking these are independent churches in the sense that they are independent from Rome? Thanks for any hints.

freikirchliche Gemeinde is simply a free church.
freikirchlicher Vertreter is a representative of the free churches (e.g. on panels which discuss ethical or media issues)

Comments on one or two points raised by other contributors:
\"independent from Rome\" - that also applies to the national \"established churches\" (Lutheran in Germany, Anglican in the UK etc.)
\"not conforming to doctrine\", \"doctrine prescribed by the state\" - this is not the point. First of all there is no state-prescribed doctrine (except perhaps in Iran, which is even more beside the point). If we use \"nonconformist\" or \"not conforming\", this is by reference to some sort of definitive standard. Historically, \"nonconformist\" arose when it was an offence in England to set up a church which did not conform to the Church of England teachings. I would expect terms such as \"not conforming\" nowadays to be used for rebel theologians within a specific theological system (e.g. rebel Catholic theologians such as Küng or Drewermann). Free churches do not measure themselves by Catholic theology (nor by Lutheran/Anglican theology), so conformity or lack of it is not an issue today.
\"Freie Christengemeinde\" - this is just one of the possible names for free churches in Germany (I am not sure whether it is used only by Pentecostals).
Other names include Evangelisch-Freikirchliche Gemeinde (= Baptist), \"FEG\" (Freie evangelische Gemeinden, an evangelical denomination, cf. http://www.feg.de), the \"Mülheimer Verband Freikirchlich-Evangelischer Gemeinden\" (a charismatic denomination - the one I belong to). There are plenty of other free church demoninations in Germany. |

Often pentecostal churches in Germany are called Freie Christengemeinden. Depending on your audience you could also use "evangelical" (UK)
