I am not particularly fond of "well-assorted" or "well-stocked" and wonder whether you can offer a better alternative. TIA.

Sarah Downing: 10:34pm Sep 11, 2006: Actually, well stocked was my first thought before I saw your comment, but I think you could just say "in large specialist stores" (or whatever word you want to use for Fachhandel). If a store is large, it's likely to be well stocked, isn't it?

SwissTell: 10:43pm Sep 11, 2006: not asking for interpretation of Fachhandel - as we're talking Zoohandel = pet stores. I am really looking for an alternative to the mentioned 2 obvious answers - and the 3 proposals so far are elaborating on the store aspect rather than the GUT SORTIERT.
Gert Sass (M.A.): 10:52pm Sep 11, 2006: Would you care to disclose what kind of "product" is said to be available? Thanks
SwissTell: 11:56pm Sep 11, 2006: to Gert - if you read my above note: we're talking pet products.
xxxFrancis Lee: 7:46am Sep 12, 2006: OK, "we're talking Zoohandel". But who is talking to whom about them, i.e. what is the specific context for your translation?
Andrea Black: 8:15pm Sep 13, 2006: I found in and/or fine used in this context:

available in fine retail stores anywhere

I think this fits best for my purposes although I may skip the "anywhere". Thanks Andrea. Sorry Andrew for not going with the "majority".

Zustimmung Erik Macki: This is a common formulation; you also hear "in better stores" or "in specialty stores," etc. Fine/better/specialty all imply large selection = "gut sortiert"

Neutraler Kommentar Marnen Laibow-Koser: I like the tone, but it misses the "Fachhandel" angle. Perhaps "available in fine *** stores everywhere"?

-> I agree, when I posted my response, I had missed that it was a pet store, so, definitely, "in fine pet stores", thanks.

Widerspruch xxxFrancis Lee: This is inferior to Andrew's because a) it's "from" or "at" and def. not "in" b) "fine" also sounds non-native in this context. THIS GLOSSARY ENTRY NEEDS AMENDING ASAP !

Just forget the ‘sortiert’, Swiss. It really is redundant in this context. Customers will not be impressed if you elaborate. "Good = good, period."

Neutraler Kommentar Kim Metzger: You're saying a "well-assorted" store would be OK in your opinion. Gut sortiert can be translated as "well-assorted" as in "well-assorted" selection of fruit, but we don't speak of "well-assorted stores."

  -> o.k.

Widerspruch Ian M-H: "gut" here implies more than "large", I think. So this rephrase isn't just a little clumsy (which is of course a matter of opinion) but also misses the point. (Kim's right, too.)

A note to all dissenters to this contribution:
I would not say I am utterly satisfied with these solutions (s. confidence level), but this has nothing to do with any of your comments. Apart from the fact that you will find these words in any reliable dictionary, or other books, resources on the web abound (especially for those who may regard the mentioning of books as a threat). Feel free to call it a conspiracy. Apparently some “natives” are just more “native” than others. BTW, to be honest, I have met native speakers making a mess of their language, and obviously your lexicon of a language will never be complete. It is just a question of personal limitations (of which some have been shown here). A translator should know this …

Some examples:

Well-assorted (… store):
“Very *well assorted* on-line store with all the latest best offers and solutions for the whole DVD duplication industry. From the simple tower systems to the high level professional systems. Claiming to be Microboards' preferred reseller they are Primera and Rimage official reseller.”
http://comparedvdsoftware.burn4free.com/dvd-duplication.htm

“The three cottages are located on the way out of the village of Bellenaves, but are still within 2 minutes walking of the local shops: 2 bakeries, a butcher, a *well-assorted* general store, post-office, newspaper shop and florist.”
http://www.frenchconnections.co.uk/for_holiday_makers/accomm...

“Shopping was brisk; most of the guests took advantage of the opportunity of a Sunday opening and stocked up on missing food items in the *well-assorted* store.”
http://www.echoworld.com/B02/B0205/B0205Lein.htm

“He commenced, with his companion's help, to load the well of the Condor with an unusually *well-assorted store* of food and water. He thought of tools, and many miscellaneous things, which might be useful in the air. He explained that he never knew what accidents he might have to succour, or in what distant places.”
http://www.sfw.org/books/96pn40.html

“The United States being also anxious that the Great and Little Osage, resident as aforesaid, should be regularly supplied with every species of merchandise, which their comfort may hereafter require, do engage to establish at this place, and permanently to continue at all seasons of the year, a *well assorted store* of goods, for the purpose of bartering with them on moderate terms for their peltries and furs.”
http://digital.library.okstate.edu/Kappler/Vol2/treaties/osa...

Well-stocked (…store):
“Small but well-stocked store offers everything you need to keep your pants from falling down.”
http://losangeles.citysearch.com/profile/81312#editorialrevi...

Select retailer:

“Just the Right Lip Stain
Calling all "natural" beauties: If you want to pump up your lip color but you don't want to look like you've applied makeup, we think you'll like Bourjois Bons Baisers de Paris. These ingenious long-lasting lip stains kind of look like magic markers but actually result in a stain so light that your lips will feel bare. Available at *select retailers*.“
http://lifestyle.msn.com/BeautyandFashion/MakeupandSkinCare/...

„To receive a $ 30 rebate on … from select retailers, follow these simple steps: …”

The list could go on without limit. But there are more interesting things waiting …

-> You seem to know them all, except for those who write books, dictionaries, and websites. Don´t teach. Learn.//1st part of what? If you refer to my "note", I think of it as a set of commonplaces only. If it is hard for you to grasp, well, ... TNMP

Widerspruch Ian M-H: Not idiomatic English and not what native speakers actually use in this kind of context. // And the lesson would be what, precisely?

Neutraler Kommentar Andrew Swift: It would also be possible to object on the grounds that you have not committed yourself to one specific answer: there are simply too many variations for our dear asker to choose from. In any case, “available from any specialized *trade*” is incorrect.
