Giovanna Pistillo: 10:41am Jun 6, 2008: what is "arte presepiale" - it is the art/craft of making (traditionally by hand) everything that is part of a nativity scene (from the set - houses, manger, etc. - to the statues, to the structure supporting the whole thing...) THANKS
TrishCivitella: 11:09am Jun 6, 2008: For Potlatch: Yes and I do agree that "nativity" could mean any birth.... but again, ask an Italian what a "presepio" is, & I assure you the majority will mention Christmas & Jesus...
Potlatch: 11:13am Jun 6, 2008: For Trish: I AM Italian and I perfectly know what it is. What is a crib?
http://images.google.it/imgres?imgurl=http://www.giancarloce...
TrishCivitella: 11:20am Jun 6, 2008: A crib, as far as I am concerned, is a baby's cradle, or creche. For the record... I too am Italian in the sense that I grew up with Italian culture and now I live here amongst Italians. What do you imagine when you hear the word "presepio"?
Potlatch: 11:25am Jun 6, 2008: This is exactly what I imagine...:

Tom in London: 11:25am Jun 6, 2008: So far as I know, in the English-speaking world there is no such thing as "arte presepiale"; it isn't a recognised art form so the issue is - what would an English-speaking person, in today's English-speaking world, think when they see the term "crib art"
TrishCivitella: 11:32am Jun 6, 2008: Potlatch: If that's what you are imagining, then I think we agree.
Tom: That's true and we have to take that into consideration.
Cathryn Taylor: 3:39am Jun 7, 2008: I'm going with Moranna's suggestion for the reasons given. The work that goes into presepi here (Sorrento) is phenomenal. Link to photos/info on one of my favourites - http://www.sorrentoinfo.com/presepi/presepe-sedil-dominova.a...

art depicting the baby Jesus in the manger

Erklärung:
Wow, this is difficult to word. Basically, the setting of the baby Jesus in the manger that is seen at Christmas time is the "presepio" (sure we all knew that), so I have tried to word it as simply as possible because I don't think there is a direct translation.
"arte presepiale" can also mean the animals, or the wise men or Mary and Joseph... basically anything that appears in the traditional setting!

From my link:
"THE following pages are not a study of Crib art: they aim at
making a little sightseeing journey to find out what Cribs have
looked like in different countries and centuries....
The Crib artists of Germany were extremely numerous: in the
sixteenth century Hans Krauth and Theodor Goth were well-known
potters......

Widerspruch Tom in London: if I came across the term "crib art" I would think "art that someone has been copied from other people's work"

-> You know, Tom, in English one word can have a lot of meanings, but in this case I'm quite sure "crib" is the right word!// I can imagine, but give a look at the link I posted, please.

Neutraler Kommentar TrishCivitella: Crib is the right word... BUT, we are talking specifically about the crib in which lay the baby Jesus when He was born....
20 Min.
-> Not in my opinion: Giovanna wrote (and this is the only Italian sense...): "everything that is part of a nativity scene "...

Neutraler Kommentar Sonia Atkinson: Edited to say I was wrong about it being a US term. However, it just isn't in common usage. I have always heard them referred to as nativity scenes, not cribs, which make me think of generic babies' cradles

-> Hi Sonia! I understand, but whh, on my dictionary, "crib" is indicated as to be a BE (British English) word??

The design of cribs/nativity scenes

Erklärung:
I don't think there is a standard term. We 'set up the crib' in England, and by this we mean the whole lot - animals and figures etc. Terms such as Nativity (or Nativity Scene) Craft come to mind but to me they sound forced and translated (albeit referred to on the net). I'm not sure it is a recognised art form as it is in Italy. You may find, I guess, that you'll have to reconstruct the whole sentence to get the meaning in (' e.g. she specialises in designing nativity scenes').

Nobody seems to have a definitive answer. To make yourself absolutely clear (and succint, without wandering off into explanatory digressions) you might say "Presepio (nativity scene) art" and then get on with the rest of the text :)

Neutraler Kommentar Potlatch: Sorry, Tom, but in Italian it's not the same sense: it should be sculpture, paint, every art dealing with the Nativity// Of course, I know thay you know...;) What I mean is:"Nativity scene art" seems to be too general

Zustimmung Cathryn Taylor: I prefer this one. Presepi building involves so many different art forms it's tough to pin it down to just 'art'. The specialists are more 'master craftsmen' than artists
