Under korrekturlesing stusser jeg på bruken av "christening" ved dåp av et fartøy. Gjelder den første nye, norske fregatten. Det må da finnes et bedre uttrykk - 'launch ceremony' eller noe slikt?

launch or naming ceremony
Erklärung:
Usually a suitable celebrity is asked to name the ship as it is launched (see reference)

Traditionally the queen or whoever it is breaks a bottle of champagne against the bows of the vessel as it glides down the slipway and announces: 'I name this ship ... May God bless her and all who sail in her'.

Everyone cheers and waves flags... It's a real cliché and the 'dåp' is not so far off the mark.

But I think you are right: naming ceremony rather than christening, despite the allusion to God.

-> In these days of GPS and radio telephony we easily forget that ships disappeared when they sailed until 100 years ago - and nobody knew where they were until they appeared at the next port - sailors needed all the luck and protection they could get.
