- Noooo, jeszcze gumę ostentacyjnie żują dresiarze. Tak, żeby wszyscy widzieli, że żują. Wydaje im się, że jak żują to są ważniejsi, albo lepsi chyba. No, tak żują dla szpanu.
Wypowiedź w rejestrze bardzo potocznym. Tłumaczenie (ustne) dla amerykanina, który siedzi za lustrem weneckim. Chętnie użyłbym terminu o podobnym znaczeniu i ładunku emocjonalnym, osadzonego w realiach USA (ew, UK - odbiorca pomieszkuje w GB)
Zależy mi na wypowiedzi, jaka mogłaby paść z ust dwudziestokilkuletniej dziewczyny, studentki, pracującej na część etatu, w realich USA ew. Wielkiej Brytanii. Nie zależy mi na książkowym oddaniu sposobu zachowania tego dresiarza. |

Po angielsku można o sobie powiedzieć "I'm cool" - po polsku "jestem szpanerem" raczej nie jest zdaniem które ktoś szpanujący o sobie powie. Mam poczucie, że podobnie jest ze zwrotem "with-it", natomiast nie znam zwrotu "to be hip". Czy mogę prosić mdarron i/lub Ensor(a?) o komentarz na ten temat?
mdarron: 12:34pm Jan 29, 2007: Definicja slownikowa: "hip" nie calkowicie oddaje uzycie tego slowa, poza tym nabiera ono roznego zabarwienia w roznych kregach i kontekstach. To samo w przypadku "cool". Np. " I am a cool cat", "I am cool with this", She is just trying to be cool"...

IMHO obydwa wyrazenia calkiem dobrze nadaja sie w przypadku "robienia czegos dla szpanu"

Wydaje mi się, że dokładnego odpowiednika polskiego zwrotu w języku angielskim nie ma. Jednak w moim kontekście słowo "cool", "hip" czy 'in-your-face" jak najbardziej będzie pasować, trzeba tylko umieścić je tam odpowiednio (trying to be..., attempting to look...)
Dziękuję za wszystkie odpowiedzi i za bardzo ciekawą dyskusję.

Fragesteller: Dzięki również za show-off. Za późno nie jest, a w każdym razie nie bardziej niż wszystkie inne odpowiedzi - tłumaczenie robiłem z kabinie i jakoś sobie poradziłem. Natomiast nie byłem zadowolony ze swojego tłumaczenia, stąd moje pytanie na Prozie.
