I think that to cut sth you need sth sharp, "sznurek" will not damage gloves by cutting them but rather as a result of friction. |

I wouldn't recommend 'as the opportunity arose'. IMO better to leave 'przy okazji' as untranslatable.

yet another option, trying to make it sound poetic ;))
And of course, it is not clear, if I was flying the kite, ripping MY gloves, or HE was flying it, ripping MY gloves (that I have given him ) ;))

and by the way: 'drąc' would literally translate as 'while ripping/tearing', or 'as I was ripping/ tearing' (from 'drzeć')
