@ Andrew - the use of 'given' as I have suggested it here is in the meaning of 'granted/destined/fated'. It's a time-honoured and poetic way of saying 'it is/was written'.

Wersje "I was destined/doomed/meant to" wyrażają determinizm: musiało się tak stać, nie mogło być inaczej; moim zdaniem w oryginale tego nie ma. Nie musiało, ale ale tak się zdarzyło, podmio0t liryczny otrzymał ten, wątpliwy lub nie, przywilej. Dlatego wersje "I was given/I had the opportunity" przekonują mnie bardziej.
