Art/Literary - Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting / Explanatory board for an art exhibition
Spanish term or phrase: Dios de los científicos
Hi,

I'm translating an explanatory board for an artistic exhibition at a museum from Spanish (Spain) into American English and I'm having trouble with a phrase. The exhibition concerns the ideas of immortality and 'an immortal body' and their implications in the areas of art, religion and science. Please see below for context:

'Su proyecto trata sobre algunas de las cuestiones filosóficas, éticas, tecnológicas y religiosas que implican los actuales retos de la bioingeniería y sus proyectos de superar la muerte biológica, pero está más centrado en plantear preguntas que en ofrecer respuestas: ¿Tenía sentido seguir hablando del Dios de los científicos o el hombre se podría otorgar finalmente sus propias leyes naturales?'

Could someone help please? Many thanks!

English translation:scientists playing God
Explanation:
I think the implication is that until now tampering with the laws of nature, ie trying to emulate God, has been seen as a bad thing. In the future it could be more acceptable.

agree  Robert Carter: Agree with Neil, this seems a bit of a stretch, but you could be right. If we knew who the artist was it might be a bit clearer.//Yeah, on second thoughts, I think you're right.

-> I don't think it's a stretch at all, and it doesn't matter who the artist is. It basically says: "Was it still appropriate to talk about scientists playing God, or could man finally start living by his own natural laws?"

agree  Muriel Vasconcellos: Good catch!
