Estas ideas, que reforzaban buena parte de los planteamientos conservacionistas de los naturalistas, han producido tensiones con aquellas otras aproximaciones más centradas en la gestión de los sistemas ecológicos ahora desplazadas del núcleo de un razonamiento excesivamente poblacional. Surge así un cierto dualismo conceptual y metodológico a la hora de abordar la conservación que aún persiste en nuestros días. La denominada ***aproximación de grano fino*** (también llamada específica o composicionalista) se centra en la protección de las especies e integra buena parte de la tradición naturalista de la biología, enriquecida ahora por los planteamientos evolutivos de la Biología de la Conservación. La conservación de grano grueso(también llamada ecosistémica o funcionalista), digna sucesora de los desvelos conservacionistas de la Ecología, se centra en la protección de niveles superiores de integración de la materia viva, como los ecosistemas.
