I thought of looking for an equivalent in English (referred to animals, bronco busting for ex.) but haven't thought of any one. This refers to how a matador has a few seconds in the ring to know exactly how a bull uses its horns, how it will respond to the cape, etc. Perhaps a better way to phrase it can be found.

César's answer is the same (to explain), but I think it doesn't put the emphasis on how impt it is for a manager to be able to size up the people they work with and know how best to tackle each individual's psychology.
