Übersetzungen Spanisch > Englisch [PRO] Art/Literary - Bergbau und Mineralien/Edelsteine / Mexican mining history | | Spanisch Begriff oder Satz: amparaba, protegía | I thought that "amparaba" should be translated here as "included" but now I have a revised version of the text and in addition to "amparaba," the author has used "protegía". Is he just being "flowery" or is there some point being made about "sheltering"? Do I need to convey that, and if so, how is it done in mining jargon?
| | Notiz(en) an den/des Fragesteller(s)psicutrinius: 5:27pm Jun 26, 2007: Sounds flowery, as you say. A Mining company "sheltering" a mine (and THEIR mine, it seems) What against?. However, it might be that the "sociedad minera de X" be a sort of a "lobby", and in that case (if Progreso... were companies, too), then makes sense Patricia Rosas: 5:32pm Jun 26, 2007: Thanks for thinking about this. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, Progreso (and a long list of names) were just "yacimientos" not companies, so I don't think there was any sort of lobbying going on. psicutrinius: 5:45pm Jun 26, 2007: Then I go for the "flowery" case. It might even be that on the revision he has not taken care of coherence, and might mean exactly the same... Enrique Espinosa: 5:55pm Jun 26, 2007: Amparar is to protect by means of a claim or a concession, so it has a legal connotation. It also denote to protect (legally) the land surrounding the mine. Amparar could be also to own, in this context. Patricia Rosas: 6:03pm Jun 26, 2007: Enrique: What you say makes me wonder if I should be using "had a claim on" (as in a mining claim)? Enrique Espinosa: 6:12pm Jun 26, 2007: Yes, you're right. I should say for "amparaba", legally owned or had a concession (claim) on... Mina de San Rafael can not protect, San Rafael concesion or claim, can protect, again, legally the land and the so called mine Patricia Rosas: 6:19pm Jun 26, 2007: Enrique: Please post that as an answer so that I give you the points! I appreciate everyone's help, but your comment made the proverbial "light dawn" in my head... Enrique Espinosa: 6:27pm Jun 26, 2007: Don't worry about the points. I 've just agreed with Liz, and I think it shouldn't be ethical to give another answer. I am glad I could help you. I appreciate your purpose. Thanks... psicutrinius: 6:29pm Jun 26, 2007: I agree, too. And as we say in Spain, "Nunca te acostarás sin saber una cosa más"... And that is the beauty of this forum Patricia Rosas: 6:39pm Jun 26, 2007: a day without ProZ ... - is like a day without SUNSHINE. Thank you all for enriching my life!!
