The production and marketing of free range eggs is financially viable only when they command a premium price over mass produced eggs.
Egg production as a business has developed into a highly intensive operation with large numbers of laying hens in controlled environment housing. To maximise space utilisation hens are kept in tiered cages, commonly called the battery system. Eggs in Ireland, in common with the rest of the developed world are largely battery produced from intensive units.
Free range egg production is frequently referred to as 'an alternative system'. The basic principle is simple. Birds are allowed to range over a dedicated grassy area and are housed at night. Free draining soil with a healthy growth of grass is ideal.

As Sol has pointed out, there is another category of eggs - barn eggs. Please see the references below for more details. It is an intermediary category (between free-range and battery-produced eggs). This is also reflected in the price: free range are the most expensive, then the barn eggs and last of all the battery-produced eggs. Mind you, they don\'t normally print \'battery-produced\' on the boxes:-))

We have all seen pictures of thousands of hens squeezed together in wire cages, with no room for exercising, let alone for flapping their wings or preening themselves and performing natural behaviour.
Hundreds of thousands of birds suffer from distorted limbs, broken bones and painfully damaged feet and claws as a result of this horrendous overcrowding
Instead of buying eggs produced under these cruel conditions, we can opt for \"barn eggs\" or \"free-range eggs\".
Barn eggs are laid by hens who are allowed to move around and have room to dust-bathe, stretch and nest. Free-range hens have all these advantages and, in addition, are able to roam outdoors.

Not every carton emblazoned with words like \"free ranging\" or \"barn raised\" actually contains eggs that deserve these descriptions.
There are specific production method requirements which must be complied with to enable hens and their eggs to be described by these terms. e.g.
* Free Range eggs are produced in poultry enterprises in which amongst other requirements the hens;
a) have continuous access to open air runs
b) which must be covered with vegetation, such as pasture.
c) have 4m<sum> each, which is a maximum of 2,500 per hectare.
d) have sheds which comply with EC Welfare of Laying Hens requirements
* Barn eggs come from poultry enterprises in which amongst other requirements the hens:
a) are stocked at a density of no more than 9 birds per square metre on the floor
b) where perches provided have minimum of 15cm of perching for every bird.
