Marketing - Einzelhandel / store department
Spanisch Begriff oder Satz: bazar
I know exactly what it is, but just can't find the right work in English. We're talking of "bazar" in relation to a specific department in a chain of Spanish supermarkets, where various small items (not food) such as kitchen gadgets, obsolescent stock and similar are sold. It isn't household appliances or kitchenware, as they have their own specific department. Best description would be "bits and bobs", but I can't use the term in the context of a due diligence!.

Erklärung:
Would this work?

Miscellaneous household equipment includes typewriters, luggage, lamps and light fixtures, window coverings, clocks, lawnmowers and gardening equipment, other hand and power tools, telephone answering devices, telephones and accessories, computers and computer hardware for home use, computer software and accessories for home use, calculators, business equipment for home use, floral arrangements and house plants, rental of furniture, closet and storage items, other household decorative items, infants' equipment, outdoor equipment, smoke alarms, other household appliances, and other small miscellaneous furnishings.

I'd say "small miscellaneous furnishings" gives you a lot of leeway for any other stuff they might include.

housewares department

Erklärung:
If you need a specific department within a large supermarket which sells various household products, I think this could be it. Below is a link of all the departments in the U.S. superstore Walmart, which lists a department called "housewares" under the broader category of "for the home".

Hope this helps.

Good luck

Neutraler Kommentar Cindy Chadd: I considered but rejected "housewares" because Sheila said that kitchenware and appliances (which make up a large part of "housewares") are in a separate department. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitchenware

-> Maybe. On Walmart's site "appliances" are listed separately to "houseware". There is a section called "Appliances and Houseware", so I think these are two distinct things. I know "kitchenware" is separate, but Sheila said "bazar" included kitchen gadgets.

I think you mean these types of stores - where everything is from China.

Of course, not everything is a dollar or pound. But the name pulls the public in.

some ideas

Erklärung:
from what I understand, the area is called "Bazar" and what they sell is a bit of everything from other departments in the store, probably at reduced prices.

1. Bazaar.
As this is the name the store gives the area, and in Spanish it is just as "misleading" (it is not a real bazar in either language), you could leave it just like that, as you have the word in English. I would think the store is trying to give this section a "special" tone, so people feel there is something beyond just getting rid of obsolete stuff. (the only thing I don't like about using this word is that in English "bazaar" also has this exotic connotation of an Oriental market, which does not happen in Spanish)

2. Specials, Bargains, or Clearance
Which would be (from what I understad) what this area is! Though you would have to ask yourself why it was not called Remate o Liquidación in Spanish!

3. Flea Market, Garage Sale...
Even your "Bits and Ends": something that gives the idea of going out looking for unsuspected merchandize at a good price.

It is probably called "bazar" in Spanish because that is what going to buy at a bazaar is: you never know what you will find, part of the "fun" is just being surprised as to what you will get, and you usually end up buying something you would have never looked specifically for... So these last suggestions give that idea in English.

housewares section

Erklärung:
If it were in a department store, then deparment would be most appropriate, but in supermarkets it is usually referred to as a section.

seasonal, clearance and miscellany

Erklärung:
I don't know that one word's going to cover this. I can picture what you mean. In the States, they often keep seasonal and clearance items in that area: chocolate Easter bunnies and the like.
