The mango is an evergreen plant that can reach >40 m in height in the tropics, although it rarely surpasses 10 m in height under subtropical conditions. The mango tree presents a monopodium trunk with rhythmic growth flushes, giving rise to verticillar and subverticillar branching. The flowering of the terminal bud stops vegetative growth and leads to the development of sympodial subunit growth. The canopy is compact and the root system is dense and vigorous. Under natural non-limiting conditions, trees possess a main pivotal root and a system of superficial adventitious roots that are mainly concentrated in the first 25 cm of the soil. When a phreatic layer is present close to the soil surface, the plant develops a second system of feeder roots immediately above this layer. The bark is thick, smooth with a pale grey–brown color, except in very old or stressed trees where many crevices can be present that give the trunk a highly cracked appearance. The simple, alternate, spirally-arranged leaves are entire and slightly leathery, and their shape can vary from elliptical to lanceolate with a length of 8–40 cm. The color of young leaves is extremely variable between cultivars and this can be utilized for varietal identification.

Low winter temperatures in subtropical areas elicit precocious flowering in young grafted trees, sometimes even at the nursery stage. This weakens the tree by depleting reserves, particularly if fruiting is allowed. To avoid fruiting, trees may be sprayed with 100 ppm gibberellic acid (GA3) every two months from the beginning of autumn until mid-spring. The frequency and number of sprays applied depend on the cultivar and the climatic conditions in the nursery. If flowering occurs after GA3 applications, they can be removed by hand-pruning the panicles just below the terminal node when the fruits reach pea size. Special care should be taken to avoid making the cut above the terminal node, because this will stimulate the development of buds at its base and such buds have a natural tendency to differentiate into flowers instead of shoots. However, if the panicles are eliminated at an early stage of development (prior to fruit attaining pea size), then the development of flower panicles from buds below the terminal node becomes more likely with low inductive winter temperatures.
