Source text - German MEIN BAYREUTH INTERVIEW MIT DANIEL BARENBOIM Ich bin 1963 das erste Mal nach Bayreuth gekommen. Selbstverständlich nicht, um zu dirigieren. Aber ich habe zwei Konzerte in Wahnfried gespielt. Ich war sehr gut mit Friedelind Wagner befreundet, Siegfrieds Tochter. Sie hatte mich eingeladen, und ich habe, wie gesagt, in Wahnfried gespielt. Dort habe ich die Familie kennengelernt. Dann wurde ich von ihrem Bruder Wolfgang eingeladen. Es war 1966 oder 1967 für den "Lohengrin". Ich habe natürlich Nein gesagt. Ich war total unerfahren in der Oper. Dann kam die Einladung für "Tristan" 1981. Die ursprüngliche Idee war, mit Patrice Chéreau zu arbeiten. Er ist eine Legende auf der ganzen Welt, aber in Bayreuth besonders. Es war wirklich eine historische Entwicklung, was er mit seinem "Ring" geschafft hat. Es war ein neuer Abflug, eine neue Richtung. Und ich habe mich wahnsinnig gefreut. Zu der Zeit war ich Chef in Paris und kannte Patrice. Wir haben Vorsingen veranstaltet und alles Weitere. Kurz vor dem Sommer 1980, also sein letztes Jahr als "Ring"-Regisseur in Bayreuth, rief er mich an und sagte: "Ich kann nicht. Ich habe fünf Jahre lang den Ring gemacht. Wenn ich nächstes Jahr wiederkomme, wird es die fünfte Oper vom Ring sein. Ich brauche ein bisschen Abstand." Und dann war er weg.
