English to French: Tape Delay: Confessions of the Eighties Underground
General field: Marketing
Detailed field: Media / Multimedia
Source text - English
Compilations and collections of any kind usually reflect the confort of familiarity and a hunger for certainties. The musicians, groups and artists who have contributed to this book will to some be well-known and to others unheard of — either way, we ask that you suspend any predetermined conclusions. The purpose of Tape Delay is to provide a more concentrated focus for ideas that, in spite of or even because of their plunder, essentially fall outside the reactive marketing games centred within a few square miles of London, New York and Tokyo. Many included here witness such exploits at first hand, and to what extent the contributors work can ‘liberate’ this environment as opposed to being sucked into it in the future, is one of the book’s main contentions. However, Tape Delay is not about independent music by ‘indie’ groupes, a scene that supports the hegemony of CBS, EMI or WEA as much as it competes with it; nor is the book a full expression of work done in the field of sound and image experimentation, whose first lesson is that nothing is ever so complete.

So the Abject is committed to trawling the self for truths denied him elsewhere. If the resulting expression contains fragments of outside realities it is because the Abject is as prone to the everyday as anyone else. Specially during the process of being abjected, the descent into the hole of the self, during which time every barb, every hurt is absorbed.

The events of the descent imbue the Abject with a deeply felt horror, the purest horror in fact, a horror not of death — after all, a final escape — but a horror of being, that life sentence in the hole with no chance of parole. The hole, the New York group Swans make only too clear, is essential to the Abject’s self-reservation.

Estuary

Soon, one of us will draw the blinds.
The fog lumbers in, grey to ivory,
and the moment will arrive, a point
of balance when the balcony
glides, its rail a departing ferry
or a slipway loping into dusk.

Almost a week since the cloud
swam down to claim its river: day
inches in behind schedule, leaves early.

And soon, when one of us can wait no longer,
we’ll slide the curtains close,
jettison whatever’s left out there
and estimate the nearest reference
to where we think we are,
in the dark, inside.

L'estuaire
