Edgar Laurence Doctorow was born on January 6, 1931 in the Bronx, New York. He was named
after the great poet and short story writer Edgar Allen Poe, who had also lived in the Bronx.
Doctorow's parents were both second-generation Americans who were descended from Russian
Jews. His mother, Rose (Levine) Doctorow, was an accomplished pianist. His father, David
Richard Doctorow, owned a music shop. When his business was wiped out during the
Depression, he sold home appliances to support the family. While studying at Columbia,
Doctorow met and married Helen Setzer, a fellow graduate student. He was drafted into the
Army in 1953 and was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, where Helen gave birth to the couple's
first child. Upon leaving the service, Doctorow returned to New York, where he got a job at the
reservations desk at La Guardia Airport. Tired of this, he moved on to a position as an "expert
reader" for Columbia Pictures. His responsibilities included reading a novel a day and writing a
1200-word critique evaluating its cinematic potential. Doctorow acknowledged that the job gave
him insights into the structure and pacing of genre novels that he would later use in his own
writing.

Progettato probabilmente dall'architetto del Duomo, Arnolfo di Cambio, nel 1299, Palazzo
Vecchio anticamente era la sede dei Priori delle Arti, dal nome dei magistrati che governavano la
città e che vi risiedevano, e fu costruito su decisione del comune e del popolo fiorentino per
confermare il prestigio della città e dare sicurezza ai magistrati nel periodo del conflitto tra
Guelfi e Ghibellini. Allo stesso periodo risale la struttura elegante ed austera come una fortezza,
a forma di quadrilatero, con la caratteristica torre merlata che poggia direttamente sulla facciata.
Dopo la morte di Arnolfo nel 1302, il palazzo fu portato a termine da altri due maestri fino al
1314, diventando la sede della Signoria. Ma il palazzo attuale è frutto di costruzioni successive
eseguite fra il XIII ed il XVI secolo, sotto il Duca di Atene, Gualtieri di Brienne, e Cosimo I de'
Medici che chiese di allargare nuovamente il palazzo, e sotto i Savonarola che, invece, fecero
costruire il "Salone dei Cinquecento" ed altre sontuose sale ricche di affreschi eseguiti dal
Ghirlandaio o Vasari. La torre di Arnolfo fu costruita verso il 1310 quando il corpo del palazzo

Translation - English Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace) was is thought to most likely to have been designed in 1299 by
Arnolfo di Cambio, the architect that designed the Duomo. Initially, it was the seat of the Priori
delle Arti (Priori of art); this name comes from the magistrates that lived there and governed the
city. The decision to build it came from both the municipality and the Florentine people to
reinforce the prestige of the city and provide security to the magistrates during the conflict
between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. Another work from the same period is the elegant
quadrilateral structure that is austere like a fortress and has the characteristic tower that is leaning
directly on the facade.
After Arnolfo’s death in 1302, work continued on the palace by two other maestri until it was
finished in 1314 when it became the seat of the Signoria (the governing body). However, what
you see today is the result of successive construction, that we done between the XIII and the XVI
centuries under the Duke of Athens Gualtieri of Brienne, and Cosimo I de’ Medici, who wanted
to enlarge the palace again. Later Savonarola decided to build the “Salone dei Cinquecento”
(Hall of 500) and other lavish halls full of frescos by Ghirlandaio and Vasari. The tower of
Arnolfo was constructed around 1310, the same year in which the body of the palace was almost
finished as well. The façade is divided in three parts which emphasize the two rows of neogothic
marble mullioned windows with trefoil arches.
