Whether you’re published through a traditional publishing house or are self-published, you still have to work hard to build your author’s platform. As of today, more authors are choosing to publish their book themselves. Reasons include being able to have full control of their work and not having to wait years until their book is released. There has been a spurt of freelance graphic designers, cover artists, and editors who are offering their services to authors. The royalties go directly into the author’s pocket with no middle men involved. A stream of independent authors are now Kindle Millionaires. Indie authors are pricing their eBooks much lower than traditionally published books. This has proven to be an effective marketing strategy for them to entice readers. Readers have discovered notable talent from Indie authors who had the courage to publish their books.
2011 was a phenomenal year for Indie Authors. The closing of Borders and Barnes and Noble bookstores raised the demand for eReaders, and many bold authors embraced the Indie movement. The Amazon Kindle became the most sought after eReader after they launched their first Kindle in 2007. The gadget was reasonably priced, and consumers found it more convenient to download a book versus purchasing a hard copy. In terms of pricing point, eBooks became more affordable than paperbacks and hard bound books.
Amazon is a major player in the Indie movement. They witnessed the demand in authors wanting to independently publish their books without paying upfront fees. They offered authors the option of having eBooks in a Kindle format, and launched Createspace which allowed authors to produce a paperback at no cost to the author. Soon Barnes and Noble introduced the Nook tablet which gave readers the option to read in color. Independent Silicon Valley eBook publishers, Smashwords and Scribd gave authors the opportunity of uploading their books in different electronic formats without paying a fee. Amazon is now a major publisher.
Virtual blog tours have taken over conventional face-to-face book signings. Book reviewers and bloggers can post reviews on their blogs and other sites. With the birth of social media like Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads, authors can easily promote their books without leaving their home. Fans wanting autograph copies of their favorite authors can now use Kindlegraph for a virtual autograph.
Books, movies, and other forms of entertainment will always be there. The method of delivery may not be as conventional as we’re used to, but they shall always be a part of our life. So this leads me to conclude that we live in an era of options and opportunities, where change is inevitable, and now is the best time to be an author. The virtual world is endless. Embrace it!

El 3 de septiembre del 2014 marcó un hito en la evolución de la epidemia de tabaquismo: la cadena de farmacias CVS -la segunda droguería más grande de Estados Unidos con más de 7.000 locales en todo el país- dejó de vender productos de tabaco.
Esta medida no solo tendrá importantes consecuencias en la reducción del consumo de tabaco en este país, sino que también implica un cambio de paradigma que puede repercutir a nivel mundial.
En cierto sentido las actitudes hacia el tabaco en Estados Unidos han completado un círculo en los últimos cien años. A principios del siglo pasado, el uso del tabaco no era deseable, pero lentamente, y por las acciones de promoción de las compañías tabacaleras, comenzó a ser aceptado socialmente, estimulado por campañas como la de Camel, que se presentaba como el cigarrillo preferido por los médicos, o por acciones como repartir tabaco a los soldados que luego retornaban de la guerra convertidos en fumadores.
Cuando en los años 50 comenzó a evidenciarse la relación entre el tabaco y el cáncer, lentamente se empezó a tomar conciencia de los daños asociados a su uso. Sept. 3, 2014 marked a milestone in the evolution of the tobacco epidemic: The CVS pharmacy chain — the second largest drugstore in the U.S., with over 7,000 locations across the country — stopped selling tobacco products.
This measure will not only have significant effects in reducing tobacco consumption in the country, but it also implies a paradigm shift that may have a global impact.
In a sense, attitudes toward smoking in the U.S. have come full circle in the last 100 years. At the beginning of the last century, tobacco use was undesirable, but slowly, thanks to tobacco companies’ promotional efforts, it began to be socially accepted. It was encouraged by advertising campaigns such as the one from Camel, which presented itself as the preferred brand of doctors, or by actions such as giving cigarettes to soldiers, who then returned from war as smokers.
During the ‘50s, when the relationship between tobacco and cancer started to become evident, people began to become aware of the harm associated with its use. However, this process has been slow in the U.S. and other developed countries, and is still in its early stages in some developing countries. The reason remains the same: the persistent action of an industry aiming to maintain its profits.
In response to this veritable "epidemic" of tobacco, the World Health Organization sponsored the development of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which came into force internationally in 2005. Over 170 countries around the world are now parties to the convention, which recommends actions such as protecting the public from exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke, providing tobacco cessation treatments, warning about the risks of tobacco, outright bans on advertising, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco, and raising taxes on these products.
Countries that have implemented these recommendations in a comprehensive manner have achieved significant reductions in tobacco consumption and diseases related to its use. These measures have also helped to change the perception of smoking as socially acceptable conduct.
It will be hard to explain to future generations that a product that kills around 6 million people every year has been so widely accepted for so long. Even more so when it not only sickens and kills those who consume it, but also those who do not smoke but are exposed to secondhand smoke.
That is why the decision made by CVS to stop selling tobacco in an environment associated with health care such as a drugstore is auspicious. It is evidence of a shift in the social norm and creates the expectation of thinking about a future "endgame" for the tobacco epidemic.

Away, Despair!
I am still oozing Newton. John Newton, that is, who wrote "Amazing Grace" after God saved him from a life—as he says—of being "a wretch" on the high seas for 13 years, and then becoming a pastor who faithfully loved two flocks for 43 years in Olney and London, England.
John Newton was a great and tender warrior against despair in other people's lives. He had been so hopeless and so beyond recovery in his sin that his own salvation constantly amazed him. If anyone should have despaired it was he. But God saved him. On March 21, 1748 a storm at sea wakened him from his folly. From that night at age 23 to the year he died at age 82 he marked the day of his awakening on board the Greyhound with fasting and prayer and thankful rededication of his life to Jesus. As an old man he wrote, "The 21st in March, is a day much to be remembered by me, and I have never suffered it to pass wholly unnoticed since the year 1748. On that day the LORD sent from on high, and delivered me out of the deep waters" (Works, I, pp. 26-27).
He wrote his own epitaph to capture the wonder of his conversion and undeserved ministry:
JOHN NEWTON, Clerk, Once an Infidel and Libertine, A Servant of Slaves in Africa, Was, by the rich mercy of our Lord and Savior JESUS CHRIST, Preserved, restored, pardoned, And appointed to preach the Faith He had long labored to destroy, Near 16 years at Olney in Bucks; And . . . years in this church. . . . (Works, I, p. 90)
Newton's amazing rescue from utter wretchedness and hardness of heart and blaspheming ways made him a rescuer of hopeless people all the rest of his life. His first biographer and friend, Richard Cecil, closes his memoir of Newton by pleading with young people to mark the error of despair. We should see that the case of a praying man cannot be desperate—that if a man be out of the pit of hell, he is on the ground of mercy. We should recollect that God sees a way of escape when we see none—that nothing is too hard for him—that he warrants our dependence, and invites us to call on him in the day of trouble, and gives a promise of deliverance. (Works, I, p. 126)
Newton had a favorite poet who died almost a hundred years before Newton was born. His name was George Herbert. He was born in 1593 into a wealthy Welsh family, lost his father when he was three, became a "public orator" in 1620 and a member of Parliament in 1625. But in 1630 he gave it all away to become a simple parish rector (pastor) in Bemerton. For the rest of his life he loved and served a flock as Newton did. Newton loved Herbert's poetry. Small wonder, when you read this verse from his poem "The Bag," which captures Newton's message and life so well:
Away, Despair! My gracious Lord doth hear:
Though winds and waves assault my keel,
He doth preserve it: he doth steer,
Ev'n when the boat seems most to reel:
Storms are the triumph of his art:
Well may he close his eyes, but not his heart."

Oh let us learn from John Newton and George Herbert the precious truth of Jesus' words, "It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance" (Luke 5:31-32). Let us listen as Paul adds, "It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost" (1 Timothy 1:15). And finally, to double our hope, give heed to Hebrews 6:18, "By two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge . . . have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us."

En los últimos tiempos el mundo ha visto con horror imágenes escalofriantes que claman soluciones. Aquella escena de decenas de niños sirios gaseados no se borra de las mentes. Tampoco las de los muertos, destrucción y desplazamientos en la Franja de Gaza, o inclusive el llanto de soldados israelíes por la pérdida de un compañero. O la del avión comercial derribado en Ucrania, y en estos días la persecución inclemente de los cristianos en Irak llevada a cabo por el Estado Islámico (EI).
Tal sucesión de hechos impactantes, más allá de ideologías, religión, intereses de poder o petróleo de por medio, sugiere, sobre todo, que algo está pasando con el ajedrez de la política mundial y en particular con el rol de Estados Unidos como ‘policía del mundo’ y la aparente tibieza de su política exterior.
El dilema de la superpotencia de que si interviene con el máximo de recursos se convierte en “injerencista e imperialista”, y si no hace nada se convierte en cómplice de un genocidio, parece haberlo resuelto el gobierno de Barack Obama con una actitud poco idealista y más bien práctica.
Curiosamente, esa actitud hace crecer la percepción de que emergen otros lideratos que le hacen contrapeso y que parecen reeditar guerras frías pasadas. En Siria, la mano la ganó Moscú al evitar una ofensiva militar de Occidente y terciar para que el sanguinario régimen de Bashar Al Asad entregara sus arsenales de armas químicas. La sangría continúa, pero el hecho de que los rivales de Al Asad sean ahora en parte grupos terroristas extremistas como el EI le quita audiencia al conflicto y presiones internas.
En Irak, la Casa Blanca ha optado por una intervención ‘humanitaria’, que deja contentos tanto a halcones republicanos como a demócratas, pero que, en el fondo, no soluciona la crisis. La inversión en formación y entrenamiento de un ejército nacional que huyó en estampida quedó en entredicho, pero los bombardeos quirúrgicos y los pasajes humanitarios intentan evitar un “genocidio”, como lo explicó Obama. Igualmente, las riquezas petroleras del país están a buen resguardo en la sureña Basora. Y no arriesga un soldado…
En cuanto a Gaza, tras el fracaso de su mediación para reanudar las negociaciones de paz entre palestinos e israelíes, EE. UU. no se ha alejado de su tradicional línea de poner por encima de cualquier consideración la seguridad de Israel. La financiación del sistema antimisiles Cúpula de Hierro contribuye a que este país sea un lugar cada vez más seguro. Y, a pesar de que hace llamados a treguas y condenas por la excesiva violencia, deja obrar al gobierno de Netanyahu.
En Ucrania, Rusia logró arrebatarle Crimea, pero Obama se la jugó por las sanciones económicas, algo que le cuesta menos y que previene futuras incursiones separatistas, aunque sabe que quienes pagarán los platos rotos serán sus aliados europeos, desdibujados por su crisis económica y rehenes de su dependencia del gas ruso.
A ellos les ha pedido más cohesión e, incluso, fortalecimiento militar, como diciéndoles que el lío ucraniano era de su resorte y que el Tío Sam no vendrá siempre en auxilio cuando el oso ruso gruña.
Son demasiadas crisis abiertas para aspirar al éxito, a lo que se suma que la administración Obama quiere darles prioridad a sus problemas internos y no a situaciones que, por más que intervenga, no podrá solucionar. Menos idealismo, más pragmatismo. Con mínimos esfuerzos y poco desgaste político interno pretende conseguir réditos que se ajustan más a la realidad de sus intereses nacionales que a lo que el mundo espera de él.

In recent times, the world has watched with horror the chilling images that clamor for solutions. That scene of dozens of Syrian children gassed cannot be erased from the mind. Or the one of the death, destruction and displacement in the Gaza Strip, or even the weeping of Israeli soldiers over the loss of a partner. Or the one of the downed commercial airplane in Ukraine and, in these days, the ruthless persecution of Christians in Iraq by the Islamic State [of the Levant].
Such a succession of shocking facts, beyond ideologies, religion, interests of power or oil, suggests, above all, that something is happening with the chess of world politics, and in particular with the role of the U.S. as the “world’s police” and its seemingly lukewarm foreign policy.
The dilemma of the superpower — that if it intervenes with the entire force of its resources it becomes “interventionist and imperialist,” and if it does nothing, it becomes the accomplice of a genocide — seems to have been resolved by Barack Obama’s administration with a less idealistic, more practical attitude.
Interestingly, that attitude increases the perception that other leadership is emerging as a counterweight to the U.S. and that [these leaders] seem to be reviving past cold wars. In Syria, Moscow won the hand by avoiding a Western military offensive and mediating for the bloody regime of Bashar al-Assad to hand over its stockpile of chemical weapons. The bleeding continues, but the fact that the rivals of al-Assad are now, in part, extreme terrorists groups like ISIL takes eyes and internal pressures away from the conflict.
In Iraq, the White House has opted for a “humanitarian” intervention, which leaves both Republican hawks and Democrats happy, but which, in the end, does not solve the crisis. The investment in the education and training of a national army that fled in a stampede was questioned, but the surgical bombings and the [creation of] humanitarian passages are attempts to avoid a “genocide,” as explained by Obama. Likewise, the oil wealth of the country is safe and sound in southern Basra. And he doesn’t risk one soldier.
As for Gaza, after the failure of mediation at resuming peace negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis, the U.S. has not strayed from its traditional line of putting Israel’s security above any other consideration. The funding for the Iron Dome missile defense system helps make this country an increasingly secure place. And, despite its calls for truces and condemnations of the excessive violence, it lets Netanyahu’s government be.
In Ukraine, Russia managed to snatch Crimea, but Obama took a gamble by using economic sanctions, something that costs him less and prevents future separatist incursions, although he knows that the ones who will pay the piper will be Ukraine’s European allies, faded by their economic crisis and hostages to their dependence of Russian gas.
He has asked them for more cohesion and even military strengthening, as if the U.S. was telling them that the Ukrainian mess was their responsibility and Uncle Sam will not always come to their aid every time the bear growls.
There are too many open crises to aspire to success, along with the fact that Obama’s administration wants to give priority to its domestic problems and not to situations that, no matter how much it intervenes, it won’t be able to solve. Less idealism, more pragmatism.
