Spanish to English: Andrés de Vandelvira (1505-1575) General field: Other Detailed field: Tourism & Travel
Translation - English He is one of the most outstanding architects of the 16th century, essential figure of the Spanish Renaissance architecture, together with Diego de Siloe and Hernan Ruiz II.
He was born in Alcaraz (Albacete), although he later moved to Ucles (Cuenca) with his future father-in-law, Francisco de Luna, to the convent see of the Military Order of St James. There he first contacts the initial Renaissance, the Plateresque style, with much decoration. He later moved to the South to settle in Villanueva de los Infantes (Ciudad Real), owing to job matters at the parish church of San Andres. Starting here, he traveled all over the Sierra de Segura villages, ruled by St James order, to repair and project parish churches in Hornos, Segura and Orcera.
Half of the year 1530, when he was already married to Luisa de Luna, he settles in Villacarrillo to build the temple, although he also receives tasks from other places all over the province of Jaen, such as Sabiote and Ubeda.
Its growing prestige makes he is required by nobility characters such as Diego Valencia de Benavides, who ask him to draw and build his funerary chapel in Baeza, or the lords of La Guardia de Jaen, Don Rodrigo Meci and Doña Mayor de Fonseca, who required the convent church at this town.
He is appointed Main Master of the cathedral and diocese of Jaen in 1553, so he controls the rest of the church works, such as the Baeza cathedral. He obtains a great success and recognition at this stage of his life, when he also performed civil works, private and public, the Casas de Corregimiento in Baeza, Juan Vazquez de Molina's palace in Ubeda, local granaries, bridges... and the Hospital de Santiago, in Ubeda, ordered by bishop Diego de los Cobos, one of his better and last intervention.
