Translation of 7 building manuals published in Italy
Translation of seven building handbooks published by a prestigious Italian publishing firm. I was also responsible for the coordination of the team commissioned with the translation of these handbooks.

Sans qu’elles aient jamais été abandonnées dans leurs formes traditionnelles, les charpentes en bois ont connu un regain d’intérêt notable avec le nouvel essor de la construction individuelle. Les industriels du bois ont alors proposé des fermettes préassemblées utilisant des âmes pleines, avec des équarrissages de faible section.

Fermes et éléments de toiture
Une ferme est l’assemblage, sur un plan vertical, de pièces de charpente formant une unité structurale destinée à supporter le toit et sa couverture ; elle comprend des parties verticales, horizontales, et des parties inclinées dites « rampants » (fig. 12.1).
Les fermes, qui se succèdent régulièrement tous les 4 m environ, supportent donc des pièces de charpente horizontales, les pannes (portée pratique inférieure à 4 m), qui soutiennent elles-mêmes les chevrons et la sous-toiture.
Les chevrons (portée pratique inférieure à 2 m) supportent, quant à eux, les liteaux ou le voligeage, ou les panneaux de particules qui reçoivent la couverture.
Une ferme simple comprend les pièces de charpente suivantes :
– deux arbalétriers, qui supportent les pannes intermédiaires ;
– un entrait (ou deux entraits moisés), qui maintient l’écartement des arbalétriers, supporte le poinçon et les pannes sablières ;
– un poinçon, qui assure la liaison des arbalétriers à l’entrait et supporte la panne faîtière ;
– deux contrefiches, pour la triangulation de la charpente et le renfort des arbalétriers.
Solivage de faux plancher
Les solives (portée pratique inférieure à 4 m) sont des pièces de charpente qui s’appuient sur les poutres et supportent les planches d’un plancher ; elles portent également, par-dessous, les lattes de plafond ou les panneaux de plafond suspendu.

Le strutture in legno, senza essere mai state abbandonate nelle loro forme tradizionali, hanno conosciuto un ritorno d'interesse notevole con il nuovo sviluppo della casa monofamiliare. Chi opera nel settore del legno ha quindi proposto capriate preassemblate, utilizzando anime piene, con squadrature di sezione ridotta.

Capriate ed elementi di copertura
Una capriata si ricava dall'assemblaggio, sul piano verticale, di diversi elementi, in modo da formare un'unità strutturale destinata a sostenere il tetto e la sua copertura; presenta parti verticali, orizzontali e parti inclinate dette ″spioventi″ (fig. 12.1).
Le capriate, che si succedono regolarmente circa ogni 4 m, sostengono quindi le parti della struttura orizzontale, gli arcarecci (con luce in pratica inferiore a 4 m), che a loro volta sostengono i correnti e la superficie interna della copertura.
I correnti (luce in pratica inferiore a 2 m) sostengono i listelli o il tavolato o i pannelli in fibre di legno che supportano la copertura.
Una capriata semplice presenta i seguenti elementi costitutivi:
– due puntoni, che sostengono gli arcarecci intermedi;
– una catena, o due catene gemellate, che mantengono la spaziatura tra i puntoni e supportano il monaco e gli arcarecci di collegamento longitudinale;
– un monaco che assicura il collegamento tra i puntoni e la catena e sostiene l'arcareccio di colmo;
– due saette per la triangolazione della struttura e il rinforzo dei monaci.
Travatura dell'assito
I travetti (luce in pratica inferiore a 4 m) sono delle parti della struttura che poggiano sulle travi e sostengono le tavole del solaio; sostengono anche, attraverso la parte inferiore, i listelli del soffitto o i pannelli del controsoffitto.

Halloween is fast fading into a ghostly mist, so now’s the time to use your scary photos to create spooky layouts!
Halloween colours are predominately black and orange with a splash of red and purple thrown in, but depending on the content of the photo any colour can be used. Card with a texture looks wonderful, especially when torn and layered. A little distressing by wetting and crumpling or sanding will also create a wonderful look. Patterned papers are always great to use and there are plenty of excellent Halloween ranges to choose from – anything from cutesy to spooky.
Black and white photographs are very much suited to Halloween layouts, or possibly a black and white photo with a coloured element. Try experimenting with photo-manipulation software and applying filters to a photograph – for example, diffuse glow gives an eerie effect.
There are many fonts available for creepy journaling of your titles, some of which are quite blocky and ideal for hand-cutting. If something finer or quicker is desired there are always rub-ons, either readymade or the easy do-it-yourself versions.
Bewitching charms
What layout would be complete without its embellishments? As Halloween is a huge festival in the USA there are many embellishments to choose from, including wonderful spooky charms, fabulous button collections and stickers of all kinds. Fibres are available that have a wonderful metallic shimmer, and satin ribbons and dyed lace are perfect on Halloween pages. Black and white gingham ribbons would also fit in well. Beads can be used to give a subdued sparkle or glitter for a livelier effect. Gel pens and gloss pens are great for any handwritten element and there are plenty of Halloween-related poems and quotes available for use. Mini spell books are perfect for hidden journaling or as a feature.
Children – and some adults! – love the opportunity to dress up at Halloween, so scrapbook pages should aim to reflect the fun, excitement and atmosphere this creates. Whether you choose a fun or spooky look, we’re sure you’ll be able to find the trick that makes your scrapbook a real treat!
Translation - Italian Dolcetto o scherzetto?
Halloween svanirà presto in una nebbia spettrale, per cui ora è il momento di usare le foto che più incutono paura per creare pagine terrificanti!
I colori di Halloween sono in prevalenza il nero e l’arancione, con macchie di rosso e di viola qua e là, ma, a seconda del soggetto della foto, potete usare qualsiasi colore. Il cartoncino goffrato è ideale, specialmente se strappato e stratificato, ma anche bagnando e sgualcendo la carta, o scartavetrandola si crea un aspetto stupendo. Le carte fantasia sono sempre perfette da usare e ci sono bellissime serie per Halloween tra cui scegliere, da quella carina a quella spettrale.
Le fotografie in bianco e nero, anche se caratterizzate da un elemento colorato, sono molto adatte alle pagine dedicate a Halloween; provate a usare il software che manipola le foto e ad applicare dei filtri all’immagine, come ad esempio il bagliore diffuso, che dà un effetto lugubre.
Ci sono molti caratteri disponibili per creare titoli raccapriccianti e alcuni di essi sono grossi e ideali per essere tagliati a mano; se invece desiderate qualcosa di più sottile e veloce, ci sono sempre i trasferelli pronti all’uso, o le facili versioni fai da te.
Ciondoli che stregano
Quale pagina sarebbe completa senza decorazioni? Poiché Halloween è una festa importante in America, ci sono molti abbellimenti tra cui scegliere: bellissimi ciondoli spettrali, favolose collezioni di bottoni e adesivi di ogni tipo. Jolee’s Boutique offre una vasta serie di abbellimenti dimensionali pronti all’uso.
I filati disponibili hanno un magnifico scintillio metallico e i nastri di seta e i pizzi tinti sono perfetti per le pagine su Halloween; anche i nastri in percalle neri e bianchi vanno bene.
