Bezüglich der Gründe, die den König dazu veranlassten, auf den Thron zu verzichten, hat die königliche Familie abgestritten, dass dies weder etwas mit dem Korruptionsfall ihrer Tochter, noch mit den jüngsten Wahlergebnissen, den jüngsten Unstimmigkeiten oder seinem Gesundheitszustand zu tun habe. Nach Angaben des Königshauses hat sich diese Entscheidung schon im Januar durchgesetzt, und zwar nach dem 76. Geburtstag des Königs, an dem er sich entschied, den Platz für seinen Sohn zu räumen.
