Amidst the small of aged furniture and the rumble of the nearby areas, including clapping from the two or three weddings celebrated a few meters away, a varied yet similar group of people met to share experiences and, in the end, found out that we all face similar challenges and situations as we struggle to be both translators and entrepreneurs.
With German punctuality, attendants all arrived within a lapse of ten or fifteen minutes, except for one, and quickly went on to order local specialties and enjoy the evening. Among the topics discussed were opportunities in new language combinations, how the market has changed in the last ten or fifteen years, specialization, and the ever-present issue about pricing. Except for Daniel, we all live in Germany, so we also went on to discuss the matter of income tax and VAT. Interestingly, only about half of the attendants actually live in Regensburg’s surrounding area, and, in fact, no one actually lives in the city proper.
Once those pleasantries were taken care of, and the meal was well on its way, we went on to discuss more relevant matters, such as our experiences with local wildlife, admission to kindergartens, traffic and public transportation, and how we ended up doing what we do.
The gathering served its purpose and, also with German punctuality, everyone left at once, with the knowledge that we are certainly not alone in the world.
