This I just read... Jun 5, 2008

How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone by Sasa Stanisic (sorry, I can't put the accents in here, pronounced Sasha Stanishich). It's a gorgeous read- even with my 5 and 3 year olds on my head all week and a TON of work, I managed to read it in a day and a half (books are better than sleep),

I read these in Spanish, but I'm sure you can get them in other languages:

Esta historia
Seda

(originally written in Italian).

Enjoy your holidays!

Since your profile says you translate from Spanish... Jun 6, 2008

...I'm sure you can enjoy reading in Spanish, too.

Here are my favorites in Spanish:

Angeles Mastretta, "Mal de Amores" and "Mujeres de Ojos Grandes"

Isabel Allende "Hija de la Fortuna".

Both are delicious!

Of course you can find a translation, but nothing compares to reading a book in the original language.

Enjoy!

Bryson Jun 6, 2008

Another vote for Bill Bryson! The book I read recently is called "I'm a stranger here myself". Enjoyable, ironic, short chapters.... Equally entertaining is "The Lost continent, travels in small-town America", also by B. Bryson.

For more serious stuff: "The Pearl" by John Steinbeck (one of my favourite authors). Wonderful novella.

Thank you! Jun 6, 2008

Wow, thank you for the great reactions. So many tips, I don't know where to start! I'll google them all to see which ones appeal to me most. Thank you for sharing your favourite titles!

I'll give a few tips myself to thank all you bookworms for your help. I would recommend:

The lovely bones by Alice Sebold
La sombra del viento (The shadow of the wind) by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
The time traveller's wife (mentioned in this thread by Barbara Wiegel) by Audrey Niffe

The time traveller's wife (mentioned in this thread by Barbara Wiegel) by Audrey Niffenegger, which I read a few weeks ago

and an older one, but my absolute favourite:

The world according to Garp by John Irving

Happy reading to all of you!

And if anyone has any other tips, they are always welcome!
