Source text - Norwegian HIV betyr "Human Immundefekt Virus". I likhet med alle andre virus, har heller ikke HIV noe selvstendig stoffskifte, og HIV må derfor angripe levende celler og utnytte disse cellenes stoffskifte til å lage kopier av seg selv. HIV angriper noen av de cellene som spiller en avgjørende rolle i det normale immunforsvaret. De hvite blodlegemene, som HIV især angriper, kalles T-hjelpeceller eller CD4-celler.
I starten kan HIV-infeksjonen (den primære HIV-infeksjon) ha to forløp. Man kan enten få en kortvarig influensalignende sykdom 1 - 6 uker etter smittetidspunktet, eller man kan ha en stum infeksjon som ikke gir noen symptomer. Men selv om man ikke har symptomer, kan man fortsatt smitte andre.
