Source text - English It is worthwhile to present some of the principles needed to achieve the receiver noise temperatures of ALMA receivers. First, the receivers are superconducting devices, so-called Superconducting-Insulating-Superconducting (SIS) devices. The SIS is cooled to 4
Kelvin. The principle is that a flow of electrical current is hindered by the insulating layer. For a given receiver setting, the current will flow when the astronomical signal shines on the device. The SIS device has three useful properties: (1) converting radiation from the sky to electrical current, (2) by combining the frequency of the incoming astronomical signal with the one generated at the AOS building, converting the sky frequency to a much lower frequency (down-conversion), and (3) adding a minimum amount of noise to the astronomical signal.
A specific example can be given for Band 7. The astronomical frequency could be, as an example, between 275 and 373 GHz (0.87 millimeters). If the astronomical signal of interest is at 345 GHz, this will be converted to 8 GHz (about 4 centimeters wavelength) with the signal properties such as amplitude, phase and sense of polarization preserved. The signal is then amplified. After amplification, the signal (plus a small amount of noise) is sent to the ALMA back end for transmission to the AOS building where it is combined with the outputs of the other ALMA antennas. Once combined, the outputs from 66 antennas are processed to produce an image.

comparecen: Andrew Carrier, Rosa Walker, Brad Jackson, Chrisch Siririka, Sandra Paillal, Toni AhSam,
Derek Aplin, Austin Bear, Robert Louie, Ivan Maquil, Richard Jefferies. Los comparecientes declaran ser de
los datos de identificación personal consignados, hallarse en el libre ejercicio de sus derechos civiles y que por

When waves pass through an aperture, there is a fundamental limit to details that can be imaged with any instrument. At 150 meters, the human eye can recognize features in the face of a person, while with a single ALMA 12 meter antenna at a wavelength of 4 mm, one can distinguish features that are separated by 3% of the diameter of the Moon.
For an interferometer, finer details can be imaged, so the situation is better. However, there is a drawback. First, the advantage. For the ALMA 12-m Array, the largest spacing between antennas is 18.5 km. This spacing determines the angular resolution of ALMA from the relation q (arcsec)= 0.14 l (mm) /D (km)1. At the shortest wavelength l, of 0.3 mm, when D is 18.5 kilometers, one can distinguish details to an angular scale of q=0.002 arc seconds or 2 milli arc seconds. This fineness of detail exceeds that of the Hubble Space Telescope; it corresponds to the size of an auto at the distance of the Moon. The drawback is that the details that can be recorded are limited by the minimum possible spacing for the ALMA 12 meter interferometer array. This is determined by the minimum spacing between two antennas, 15 meters. Thus at 4 mm, measurements of details larger than 50 arc seconds are not recorded by the 12-m Array. If this lack of response is not compensated for, the science that can be done with ALMA becomes seriously restricted. This lack of response to extended source structures is illustrated in Fig. 1. For unresolved sources, this lack of response is not important, since the image of an unresolved source is just the instrumental beamsize. However for extended sources, features are not recorded. Typical examples of xtended sources are galactic molecular clouds, or CO in nearby galaxies. For these, the lack of short antenna spacings causes a loss of image fidelity.

Cuando las ondas pasan a través de una apertura existe un límite fundamental para los detalles de imagen que se pueden obtener con cualquier instrumento. A 150 metros, el ojo humano puede reconocer los detalles en la cara de una persona, mientras que con una única antena ALMA de doce metros a una longitud de onda de 4mm, podríamos distinguir características que estén distanciadas por el 3% del diámetro de la Luna.
Para un interferómetro la situación es mucho más favorable, ya que puede obtener imágenes con mayor nivel de detalles, no obstante tiene existe un inconveniente. Pero primero analisemos las ventajas: para el Conjunto ALMA 12mt la distancia más grande entre las antenas es de 18,5km. Esta distancia determina la resolución angular de ALMA a partir de la relación (arcsec) =0,14 (mm)/D (km)1. A la longitud de onda más corta , de 0,3mm, cuando D es 18,5km uno puede distinguir detalles a una escala angular de = 0,002 segundos de arco o 2 mili arco de segundos. Esto corresponde al tamaño de un auto a la distancia de la Luna y su excelente calidad de detalle supera la del Telescopio Espacial Hubble.
El inconveniente es que los detalles que se pueden registrar están limitados por la distancia mínima posible que pueda haber para el conjunto interferométrico de 12metros de ALMA. Esta se determina por la mínima distancia entre dos antenas que es 15 metros. De este modo a una longitud de onda de 4mm, las mediciones de detalles mayores a 50 arco segundos no pueden ser registradas por el Conjunto 12mt. Si esta falta de respuesta no se compensa la operación científica que se pueda hacer con ALMA sería en extremo restringida. Esta falta de respuesta a estructuras de fuente extendidas se muestra en la Figura 1. Para las fuentes no resueltas, la falta de respuesta no es de importancia, ya que la imagen de una fuente no resuelta corresponde sólo al tamaño del haz instrumental. Sin embargo, las características para las fuentes extendidas no se logran registrar. Las nubes moleculares o el dióxido de carbono en galaxias cercanas son ejemplos típicos de fuentes extendidas. Para éstas, la falta de distancias cortas de antenas provoca una pérdida en la fidelidad de la imagen.
