Online-Stickkurs „Lange Leine“
Block 7: Tea - Time
Naturfarbene Stickereien sind immer noch und immer wieder der Renner. Sie passen zu allem, denn sie fügen sich in ihre Umgebung immer harmonisch ein. Und es ist so eine interessante Herausforderung, einmal auf Farbe als Gestal¬tungsmittel zu verzichten und stattdessen andere Elemente wirken zu lassen: Form, Struktur, Licht und Schatten.
Einen Block in neutralen Tönen wie beige und wollweiß hatte ich mir als Mitte gedacht für alle, die ihre bestickten Patches am Schluss zu einem Quilt verarbeiten möchten. Die Idee dazu hatte ich seinerzeit für meinen Farb-Kreis-Crazy, denn ich suchte etwas, dass den Mittelpunkt beruhigen und neutralisieren sollte.
So entstand mein erster Block in Naturtönen – und ich war begeistert von dieser Farbe, denn sie erlaubt (fast) alles! Man braucht sich nicht krampfhaft in der puristischen Kunst des Weglassens zu üben, sondern man darf prassen mit Materialien, Formen und Strukturen, denn es ist durch die ruhige Farbe überhaupt nicht möglich, das Teil zu überladen.
Naturmaterialien
Besonders schön wird ein naturfarbener Block mit dreidimensionalen Elementen. Was gibt es da? In meinem Materialpäckchen für den siebten Block habe ich einiges eingepackt, was 3-D-Effekte ermöglicht. Vor allem das naturbelassene Curly, einfach aufgecoucht, ist ideal für den Einstieg. Danach braucht man nur noch drumherum weiter zu gestalten und da fällt euch sicher von selber noch vieles ein, z.B. alle möglichen cremefarbenen Perlen und Knöpfe, eingefilzter weißer Mull, aber auch schöne Dinge aus der Natur wie Muscheln, Holzscheibchen, Schneckenhäuschen ...

Kokons
Auf meinem Quilt auf Seite 1 unten habe ich auch Seidenkokons verwendet. Es gibt sie im Textilkunst-Fachhandel zu kaufen. Es sind Kokons, in denen zuvor eine echte Raupe gewebt hat. Man kann sie aufschneiden und die Einzelteile wie Blüten zusammensetzen. Oder (wie auf meinem Block) man kann sie in zwei Hälften schneiden und die Hälften mit Perlen füllen. Sehr schön sieht es auch aus, wenn man die Kokons nur oben aufschneidet (wie man ein Ei köpft), aufnäht und dann dicke Garne „herauswachsen“ lässt. Man kann sie auch spiralförmig aufschneiden und auf der Stickerei arrangieren. Oder sie mit Seidenmalfarbe einfärben. Und man kann sie als Quastenkopf benutzen. Und sicher gibt es noch weitere Verwendungs¬möglichkeiten.
Teekanne von Sigrid Veith Das Thema „Tea Time“ ganz wörtlich genommen hat Kursteilnehmerin Sigrid Veith. Sie verwendete für ihre Teekanne unter anderem einen Silk-Rod (was das ist, erfahrt Ihr auf Seite 3), darüber naturfarbene Perlmutt-Knöpfchen und für die Struktur stickte sie French Knots und Wickelstiche (Bullion-Knoten).
Wie Wickelstiche (Bullion-Knoten) gemacht werden, erfahrt ihr auf Seite 5 dieses Blocks.
Silk Rods
Ein anderes interessantes Material sind „Silk Rods“. Es gibt zwei Sorten, aber im englischen nur einen Namen dafür. Um beide Sorten besser auseinander halten zu können, habe ich mir für die zweite Sorte einen zusätzlichen Namen ausgedacht und unterscheide jetzt zwischen Seidenhülsen und Seidenstäbchen.
Die Seidenhülsen (Bild unten), bekannt aus entsprechenden „Experimental Packs“ sind hart, rund und relativ schwer zu verarbeiten. Man kann sie aufcouchen oder auch versuchen, sie etwas auseinander zu drücken und von innen zu besticken.
Die Seidenstäbchen sind viel weicher als die Seidenhülsen und deshalb leichter zu ver¬arbeiten. Eines davon habe ich eurem Materialpäckchen beigelegt. Im Bild unten seht ihr, wie man daraus schöne „Teerosen“ machen kann: Das Seidenstäbchen wird einfach aufgerollt und festgenäht. Es schadet dem Seidenstäbchen nicht, wenn man es (allerdings vorsichtig!) auseinanderzieht. Dadurch wird es noch länger und biegsamer.
So entstehen Silk Rods:
An großen Maschinen, an denen Seide abgehaspelt wird, laufen die endlosen Fäden über Eisenstangen, die im Laufe der Produktion sehr heiß werden. Hinzu kommt, dass die Seide ja klebrig ist. Abends sind dann die Stangen also völlig zugekleistert von diesem Seidenbrei. Irgendwann kam ein kluger Kopf auf die Idee, das verklebte Seidenzeugs von diesen Stangen herunter zu schneiden und als Kreativmaterial zu verkaufen.
Seiden-Hankies und Caps
Wie der Name schon vermuten lässt, haben die Hankies Taschentuchformat und die Caps sehen wie Mützen aus. Es sind Seidengespinste, die man als Untergrund nass oder mit der Trockennadel einfilzen und dann besticken kann (siehe rechts). Wer einen Embellisher besitzt, kann diese Hankies auch damit sehr gut auf einen Stoff nadeln. Die Ränder der Hankies sind sehr strukturreich, deshalb sollte man sie so belassen, wie sie sind und sie nicht mit der Filznadeln plattwalzen.
Throwsters Waste
Ein weiteres Material aus dieser Serie ist entbastetes „Throwsters Waste“. Das ist Seide aus den Randschichten des Kokons, zur Garnherstellung nicht mehr verwertbar, aber man kann es sehr schön mit Filznadeln auffilzen, es glänzt toll (wenn man nicht zu lange darin herum stochert) und lässt sich behandeln wie Wolle, das heißt es eignet sich besonders gut zum Auffüllen oder zum Überdecken einer Naht, einer weniger gelungenen Stelle usw. Im Bild unten habe ich Throwsters verwendet oben rechts und unten links. Und hier noch ein ganz besonderer Tipp von mir: Über das Throwsters kann man noch ein paar Knötchenstiche der gleichen Farbe setzen, das befestigt und strukturiert die gefilzte Fläche noch weiter.
Ganz andere Eigenschaften besitzt das nicht entbastete
Throwsters Waste. Es ist sehr hart, letztlich ist es wahr-scheinlich nur der Bast selber und hat nur einen Vorzug: es verklebt, wenn man es nass macht. Also: Fasern auf Back-papier streuen, mit dem Wäschesprenger nass machen, zweite Lage Back-papier darüber, dann bügeln. Fertig ist das „Gespinst“, das man nun noch färben kann.
Auf dem Bild rechts die hell-orangen Flächen (Kreise und Halbmond) sind übrigens Bouretteseide-Fasern, die ich mit dem Clover-Set zu einer Fläche zusammengefilzt und dann ausgeschnitten habe.
Im siebten Materialpaket sind auch dickere Garne enthalten, die man mit der Chenille-Nadel Nr. 14 (aus dem ersten Paket) versticken kann. Probiert einmal einige Stiche aus, wie riesig sie doch werden mit dieser Garn-und-Nadel-Kombination. Etwa die gewebten Räder – mit und ohne Rückstich - aus dem Kapitel „Kreis-Läufe“. Oder natürlich Knötchenstiche! Oder ein Knopflochstich-Riegel: man spannt einen Faden über eine weite Strecke, macht einen winzigen Sparstich und spannt auf dem Rückweg einen zweiten Faden parallel zum ersten. Dann, vorne wieder angekommen, setzt man über die beiden Fäden ganz dicht viele Knopflochstiche. So entsteht ein Riegel, der mit dicken Garnen gearbeitet auch sehr dick wird und Struktur gibt. Probiert weitere Stiche aus, wie sie mit dicken Garnen wirken.
Ein weiteres interessantes Material zur Erzielung von Struktur ist Schlauchgarn. Viele Garne, die als Bändchengarn verkauft werden, sind in Wirklichkeit Schläuche! Das bedeutet, dass man sie füllen kann, und zwar mit einem einfachen Topflappengarn oder ähnlichem. Man nimmt dafür besser eine stumpfe Nadel, damit man leichter in den Schlauch hineinkommt. Anschließend kann man das äußere Schlauchgarn noch stark zusammen¬schieben (anrüschen), so entsteht ein schön strukturiertes Gebilde, das aufgenäht und dabei beliebig in Mäander (= Kurven) gelegt werden kann.
Der wirkungsvollste Struktur-Stich ist der Wickelstich. Er wird auch Bullion-Knoten genannt, da seine Struktur an spiralförmige Kantillen, auch Bullion-Draht genannt, aus der Gold¬stickerei erinnert. Er ist nicht gerade der leichteste aller Stiche. Doch mit etwas Geduld und Übung wird er nach einiger Zeit gelingen.
Wickelstich
Englischer Name: Bullion Knot
Damit euch möglichst lange Bullionknoten gelingen, habe ich auch eine besonders lange Nadel beigefügt, auf die man sehr viele Umdrehungen wickeln kann, ohne zwischendurch absetzen zu müssen, was nur etwas für Profis ist.
Nun noch eine Beschreibung des Stiches: Man kommt bei A hoch und geht dort, wo der Bullion enden soll, bei B mit der Nadel wieder herunter. Normalerweise hätte man jetzt einen einfachen Plattstich gemacht. Aber statt den Faden ganz auf den Stoff zu ziehen lässt man eine lange Schlinge stehen, so lang, wie es der Faden nur zulässt. Nun kommt man mit der Nadel wieder in A hoch, allerdings nur HALB. Man lässt die Nadel nur halb durch den Stoff gucken. Die andere Hälfte der Nadel hält man mit der Hand unter dem Stoff fest. Das Gestrichelte auf dem mittleren Bild zeigt, was unter dem Stoff passiert.
Nun wickelt man den Faden so oft um die Nadel, wie es geht. Ob links oder rechts herum, ist völlig egal. So lange, bis das Gewickelte auf der Nadel so lang ist, wie der Abstand zwischen A und B. Durch gelegentliches Absenken der Nadel in Richtung des Punktes B kann man zwischendurch immer wieder prüfen, wie viel man noch auf die Nadel wickeln muss, bzw. ob es schon reicht.
Als nächstes kommt man mit der Hand hoch und versucht, die Nadel jetzt komplett durch den Stoff nach oben zu ziehen. Dies ist anfangs schwierig. Man muss nun Geduld auf¬bringen und immer weiter an der Nadel ziehen, zwischendurch ein wenig fluchen ist aus¬drücklich erlaubt, Hauptsache, man gibt nicht auf. Irgendwann spürt man erleichtert, dass die Nadel durch den Stoff gekommen ist. Dann muss man ziehen, ziehen, ziehen, die Schlinge wird dadurch immer kleiner – siehe letztes Bild – bis sie zum Schluss ganz verschwunden ist, dann sticht man mit der Nadel bei B wieder nach unten und darf stolz sein!
Zum normal langen Bullionknoten, der von Punkt A nach B reicht, gibt es aber auch noch zwei Alternativen:
Wenn man mehr auf die Nadel wickelt, als der Abstand zwischen A und B lang ist, entsteht ein gebogener Bullion-Knoten. Wenn man weniger auf die Nadel wickelt als der Abstand zwischen A und B, dann entsteht ein Bullion „am Stiel“. Beides ist nicht falsch, sondern interessante Varianten.
Es gibt eine breite Skala von Naturtönen, die vielen Farbnamen sagen schon einiges darüber aus: creme, beige, ecru, wollweiß, perlmutt, Eierschale, Champagner, Elfenbein und viele mehr. Denn reines Weiß kann ganz schön „knallig“ wirken. Gerade im Crazy-Bereich wird deshalb viel mit Tee gefärbt, damit es nicht heraussticht oder weil es ein wenig antik wirken soll.
Das Färben mit Tee ist einfach: Man macht Wasser in einem Topf heiß und gibt Teebeutel und Färbegut hinein. Das kann alte Spitze sein (oder nicht so alte, um sie alt aussehen zu lassen), auch umhäkelte Taschentücher werden dadurch oft interessant, Seidenbändchen, aber auch die Garne aus dem achten Päckchen. Man kann nicht genau sagen, wie lange das Färbegut im Tee ziehen muss, das ist Geschmacksache. Allerdings sollte man nicht zu weit weg gehen, denn je nach Teesorte geht es mit dem Braun-Werden manchmal schnell. Es ist auch möglich, losen Tee zu nehmen, diesen sollte man dann aber in einem gut ge¬schlossenen Teefilter oder einem Dessous-Säckchen mitkochen, also einem Säckchen, das normalerweise zum Waschen empfindlicher Dinge mit in die Waschmaschine geworfen wird.
Jahreszeitlich nicht immer möglich, aber im Fall der Erntezeit gut zu wissen ist auch
das Färben mit Walnüssen. Es ist ähnlich wie das Färben mit Tee, allerdings sollte dafür ein Topf genommen werden, der nicht mehr zum Kochen benötigt wird. Die grünen Walnuss-Schalen werden - am besten mit Gummihandschuhen – aufgesammelt und von den braunen Nüssen abgepellt, sofern sie noch nicht von selber abgefallen sind. Sie kommen in ein Dessous-Säckchen. Von außen kann man die Schalen weiter zer-kleinern, indem man ein wenig auf dem Säckchen herumtrampelt. Am besten nach einem misslungenen Bullion-Knoten. ☺
Das Färbegut wird möglichst schon am Vor-
Abend in Wasser eingeweicht, damit es die
Farbe besser aufnehmen kann. Wenn das Wasser (mit den Walnussschalen) kocht, gibt man das Färbegut hinein und sollte die Sache gut beaufsichtigen. Am besten zieht man ge-legentlich das Färbegut hoch (mit einem alten Kochlöffel) und begutachtet die Farbe. Sehr
interessant wird es, wenn man verschiedene „Züge“ macht. Also einige Sachen früher und andere später herausnimmt.
Eine Vorbeize ist bei Walnuss-Färbungen nicht nötig, da die Schalen schon von natur aus genug Gerbsäure enthalten. Leider nehmen nur tierische Fasern die braune Farbe an. Wer also auch gerne Stoffe färben würde, muss sich auf Seidenstoffe beschränken. Schön werden Crepe de Chine und Crepe Satin, aber auch Etaminé de Laine. Besonders robust ist Bourette-Seide. Sehr reizvoll ist, dass die Stoffe und Garne die Färbung ganz unterschiedlich annehmen. Dies kann auf einem Quilt toll aussehen. Oder, wie oben im Bild zu sehen, auf einem Döckchen Wolle mit Seide verzwirnt.
Noch ein Tipp: Sobald die Walnüsse herunterfallen, kann man schon mit dem Sammeln beginnen, indem man die Schalen in einem Gefäß mit (Regen-)wasser sammelt. Also man füllt Wasser ein, wenn es nicht sowieso regnet. In diesem frühen Stadium kann man sogar schon Garne dazu legen, sie nehmen schon eine gewisse Färbung an, ähnlich wie die oben abgebildete Seide. Sollte einem das so gefärbte Material zu blass erscheinen, kann man es ja immer noch mitfärben, sobald genug Schalen dafür vorhanden sind. Was heißt „genug Schalen“? Eine Mengenangabe ist schwer zu machen, denn es richtet sich ja eher danach, wieviele Schalen man bekommen kann. Ungefähr ein Kilo wäre ein guter Richtwert.
Sehr, sehr spannend ist auch: Das Färben mit Rost
Dafür muss der Stoff – und diesmal darf es durchaus auch Baumwolle sein – zuvor in Wasser getränkt werden, dem man einen kräftigen Schuss Essig bei¬fügt. Den Stoff kann man auch wie bei der Shibori-Technik in Falten legen. Dann dringt der Rost durch mehrere Schichten und das Muster wiederholt sich mehr oder weniger.
Obenauf legt man Nägel, die auch noch einmal mit dem Essigwasser über- gossen werden und packt das Ganze in Frischhaltefolie. Anstelle von Nägeln kann man auch andere rostende Dinge nehmen, ich hatte mal Büroklammern, aber der Effekt hat mir nicht gefallen, denn es sah hinterher wirklich nur wie gerostete Büroklammern aus, während
die Nägel doch sehr geheimnisvolle Mäander bilden. Kronkorken ergeben tolle Ringe! Die englische Textilkünstlerin Marylin Pipe verwendet Stahlwolle. Im Bild oben rechts ist ein solcher gerosteter Stoff mit Japangold überstickt, wobei ich öfters die Määnder aufgegriffen und an ihren Rändern entlang gecoucht habe.
Dann wird das Päckchen zugepackt und jetzt kommt das Schwerste, denn man muss einige Tage (ca. 3 - 4) warten und darf nicht hineingucken. Deshalb mache ich es manchmal, bevor ich verreise. Aller-dings darf der Stoff auch nicht zu lange eingewickelt bleiben. Einmal war ich zwei Wochen verreist und dann hatte sich der Rost schon durch den Stoff gefressen. Oder durch die Frischhaltefolie entsteht Schimmel bzw. Alufolie beginnt „mitzuarbeiten“ und hinterlässt silberne Stellen, die nicht zu dem Rost passen.
Oben: Gerostete Nägel, die vorher aufgecoucht wurden. Rechts: „Rostblume“ mit aufgecouchtem „Valerie“. Unten weitere „Rostblumen“, die ich mit freiem Maschinensticken herausgearbeitet habe. Man muss auch ein bisschen seine Phantasie spielen lassen, dann lässt sich sogar mal ein Frosch entdecken:

Block 7: Tea - Time
Embroidered pieces in natural colors always have been and always will be a hit. They match everything, as they always fit harmoniously into their surroundings. And it is a very interesting challenge to let go of color as a design element and to use other elements instead: form, structure, light and shadows.
I figured a block in neutrals such as beige or cream would work great as the central block for all of you, who intend to assemble their embroidered patches into a quilt in the end. This idea came to me when I was working on my Color Wheel Crazy, as I was looking for something to calm down and neutralize the centre.
This is how my first block in neutral colors came into being – and I was thrilled about this color, because it gives permission to do (nearly) everything. No need to force yourself to practice the puristical art of letting go, on the contrary, you have permission to overload with material, form and structure; due to the calm color there is no way you can ever use too much.
Natural materials
A naturally-colored block will turn out particularly beautiful when you use three-dimensional elements. What do we have here? I packed some things that will create 3-D effects into the material kits for the seventh block. Especially the untreated Curly, when just couched onto the surface, is ideal to start with. After that all you have to do is add some things around it and I am sure you will come up with a lot of ideas, e.g. all sorts of cream-colored beads and buttons, white cheesecloth covered in felt, but also pretty things from nature, such as sea shells, little wooden disks, snail shells...

Cocoons
I also used silk cocoons on my quilt on page 1. You can purchase them in textile arts specialty stores. They are cocoons which used to house a real caterpillar spinning silk. You can cut them open and assemble the single pieces to look like flowers. Or you can cut them open (see my block) and fill the halves with beads. Another very pretty option is to cut the cocoon open at the top (as if opening a soft-boiled egg) and have thick threads „grow“ out of it. You can also cut them open in spirals and attach the spirals on your embroidery. Or you can color them with silk paints. And you can use them as the top of a tassel. And I am sure there are still more possibilities to use them.
Teapot by Sigrid Veith Class participant Sigrid Veith interpreted the subject „tea-time“ quite literally. For her teapot she used, among other things, a silk rod (see page 3 for more information), small mother-of-pearl buttons above it and French Knots and Bullion Knots to add structure.

Silk Rods
Another interesting material are „Silk Rods“. There are two types, despite the fact that there is only one name for them. In order to differentiate between the two I came up with an extra name, so now I distinguish between silk husks and silk rods.
Silk husks (image below), known from „experimental packs“, are hard, round and quite difficult to work with. You can couch them onto your piece or you can try to push them somewhat apart and stitch onto them from the inside.
Silk rods are much softer than silk husks and therefore easier to incorporate. I added one to your materials selection. You can see in the image below how to create beautiful tea roses with them: just roll up the silk rod and fixate with some stitches. There is no harm in (albeit carefully) pulling the silk rod apart, which makes it even longer and more flexible.
This is how silk rods are created:
Huge machines are used to reel the silk; endless threads are guided over iron rods that become very hot during the production process. Add to this the fact that silk is sticky and you will have the iron rods completely covered in a sticky silky mass at the end of the day. One day a smart person had the idea to cut this sticky stuff off the rods and sell it as creative material.
Silk-Hankies and Caps
As you can guess from the names, silk hankies are shaped like handkerchiefs and the caps look like hats. They are woven silk objects that can be wet- or needle-felted onto a surface and then embroidered on (see image on right). If you own an Embellisher you can easily attach the hankies onto the fabric with its help. There is a lot of structure around the edges of the hankies, which should be left alone and not flattened with the felting needles.
Throwster’s Waste
Another material from this group is degummed „Throwster’s Waste“. It is silk from the outer parts of the cocoons, not usable to be turned into thread, but beautiful to be needle-felted onto a surface; it has a beautiful sheen (if you don’t stab it too long) and can be used like wool yarn, e.g. it is particularly useful to fill an area or cover up a seam, a not so well-turned- out spot etc. In the image below I used Throwster’s on the top right and bottom left. Here is my special tip for you: work some French knots in the same color on top of the Throwster’s waste to further fasten and add structure to the felted area.
Throwster’s waste that has not been degummed possesses completely different qualitites. It is very hard, probably really only the bast fiber, and has only one advantage: it gets sticky when wet, which means: sprinkle fibers onto parchment paper and wet with a spray botle; add another layer of parchment paper and iron. You will end up with a web that you can now choose to dye.
By the way, the light orange areas (circles and half-moon shapes) are silk waste fibers that I turned into a surface with the help of the Clover needle-felting set and then cut into shapes.
You will also find heavier threads in the seventh material kit that can be embroidered using the Chenille needle #14 (from the first material kit). Try a few stitches and find out how very big the stitches turn out to be with this needle-and-thread combination, for example the woven wheels – with and without backstitch – from the chapter „Cycles and Circles“. Or French knots, of course! Or a buttonhole stitch bar: stretch a piece of thread across a long distance, fixate with a tiny thrifty stitch, then stretch a second thread on the way back parallel to the first thread. Having arrived back at the beginning start stitching a lot of of buttonhole stitches very closely to each other over both threads. This will create a bar, which, when worked with heavy thread, will turn out very thick and adds structure. Test-run more stitches to see their effect when worked with heavy thread.
An additional interesting material to create structure is tube yarn. A lot of yarn that is sold as tape yarn really consists of hollow tubes! This means that you can fill them, for example with a simple potholder yarn or some such thick yarn. In order to do this use a blunt needle to better work your way into the tube. Then you can push together the outer tube yarn (to create ruching), which will form a beautifully structured shape that can be couched in a meandering fashion at will.
The most effective structural stitch is the bullion knot; its name is derived from looking like spiral bullion wire, as used in gold embroidery. It is not exactly the easiest of all stitches, however, with a bit of patience and practice you will succeed in producing it.
Bullion Knot
In order for you to work the longest possible bullion knots I added an extra long needle which you will use for wrapping the thread around many times without stopping in between, something reserved for true professionals.
Here is how to work this stitch: Come up at point A and stitch back down again at point B, where you want the bullion knot to end. This would normally be considered a regular stay stitch. But instead of pulling the thread through to ly flat on the fabric you leave a loop, as long as the length of the thread allows. Now come up at point A again, however, only half-way, i.e. the needle will only appear half-way through the fabric. Your hand will hold the other half of the needle underneath the fabric. The dotted lines in the image above show what is going on underneath the fabric.
Wrap the thread around the needle as often as possible, no matter whether towards the left or the right. Do this until the wraps on the needle are as long as the distance between point A and point B. If you lower the needle onto the fabric every now and again you can check how often you still need to wrap the thread, or if you have enough wraps already.
Now bring your hand to the top of the fabric and try to pull the needle completely through the fabric to the top. This is difficult in the beginning. You have to be patient and keep pulling on the needle, interspersed cursing specifically allowed, main thing being: don’t give up! Eventually the moment will come, when you notice with relief that the needle made it through the fabric. Then you have to pull, pull, pull, the loop getting smaller and smaller – see last image - , until it is gone completely. Stitch back down again at point B and be proud of yourself!
There are two alternatives to the regular bullion knot between point A and point B:
If you wrap more thread onto the needle than there is space between A and B you will end up with a curved bullion knot.
If you wrap less thread onto the needle than there is space between A and B you will end up with a bullion knot on a stem.
Both of these knots are not wrong, but interesting variations.
There is a wide scale of natural shades, the many color names already explain a lot: creme, beige, ecru, mother-of-pearl, egg shell, champagne, ivory and many more. Pure white can seem very „gaudy“ indeed. Particularly in the Crazy area whites are often dyed with tea, so that they do not stand out, or that they appear to be a little antique.
Using tea as dye is easy: Heat water in a casserole and add teabags and dye-stuff. This can be old lace (or not so old lace that is going to look old), handkerchiefs with crochet edges turn out quite interesting, silk ribbons, or the threads from package #8. One cannot exactly say how long the dye-stuff has to remain in the tea, it depends on your personal taste. However, you should keep an eye on it, since, depending on which type of tea you use, things can turn too brown very suddenly. You can also use loose tea, which should be boiled in a tightly closed tea ball or a lingerie bag, meaning a small bag that is otherwise used to machine wash delicate items.
While not possible year-round, it is good to know that around harvest time you can dye with walnuts. This works similar to dyeing with tea, however, use a pot that you do not need for cooking anymore. Pick up the green walnut husks – preferably while wearing rubber gloves – and peel them off the brown walnuts, if they have not fallen off by themselves. Place them inside a lingerie bag. You can break the husks in smaller pieces, if you forcefully step onto the bag a few times. This is best done after a failed bullion knot. ☺
If possible, immerse the dye-stuff in water the evening before, so that it can absorb the dye better. Once the water (with the walnut husks) has come to a boil, add the dye-stuff and watch the operation carefully. It is recommended to pull up the dye-stuff (with the help of an old wooden spoon) every now and again to check the color. It is very interesting to produce different dye lots, i.e. extract some things earlier and some things later.
There is no need to mordant the dye-stuff when dyeing with walnuts, as the husks contain enough tannins on their own. Unfortunately only protein fibers take the brown dye, so, in case you would like to dye fabric, too, you are restricted to silk fabrics. Crepe de Chine and Crepe Satin turn out beautifully, and so does Etamine de Laine. A very sturdy fabric is coarse silk, or silk waste fabric. It is a very charming fact that the fabric and threads take the dye in very different ways. This can look fantastic in a quilt; or, as seen in the image above, in a skein of wool plied with silk.
Another hint: as soon as the walnuts start falling off the tree, you can start collecting them in a container filled with (rain) water. Fill it with water, if it does not rain anyway. You can even add threads at this early point, as they will take a bit of dye already, a bit like the silk in the image above. If the material thus dyed should seem too pale for your liking you can always add it to the dye pot later, when you have gathered enough husks. What does it mean, „enough husks“? It is hard to give an exact quantity, as you are limited by how many husks you will be able to obtain; about one kilo would be a good estimate.
Also most exciting: dyeing with rust.
For this method immerse the fabric – in this case cotton fabric is also quite appropriate – in water with an added lacing of vinegar. You can fold the fabric as done in the shibori technique, which makes the rust penetrate several layers and repeat a pattern, more or less.
Place nails on top of it, drench in more vinegar water and wrap the whole lot up in plastic wrap. Instead of nails you can use other items that will oxidize. I once used paper clips, but I did not like the effect, as the pattern afterwards really looked just like rusted paper clips, whereas nails definitely produce a more mysterious meandering pattern. Bottle caps make great circles! The English textile artist Marylin Pipe uses steel wool. In the image above on the right you see such a rusty fabric embroidered with Japan gold. I followed the meandering paths here and there and couched along their edges.
Now the parcel is being sealed, followed by the most difficult step, as you have to wait for several days (3 or 4, approximately) and are not allowed to take a peek. This is why I do this sometimes before going travelling. However, the fabric is not supposed to stay wrapped up too long. One time I was gone from home for two weeks and the rust had eaten through the fabric already. Or the plastic wrap encourages mold, or the aluminum foil starts to „participate“ and leaves silver traces that do not match the color of the rust.
