Source text - English Wise compromise is one of the basic principles and virtues of the British. If a continental greengrocer asks 14 shillings for a bunch of radishes, and his customer offers 2, and finally they strike a bargain agreeing on 6 shillings, this is just the low continental habit of bargaining; on the other hand, if the British dockworkers or any workers claim a raise of 4 shillings per day, and the employer first flatly refuses even a penny, but after six weeks strike they agree to a rise of two shillings a day – that is yet another proof of the British genius for compromise. Bargaining is a repulsive habit; compromise is one of the highest human virtues – the difference between the two being that the first is practised on the Continent, the latter in Great Britain. The genius for compromise has another aspect, too. It has a tendency to unite together everything which is bad. English club life, for instance, unites the liabilities of social life with the boredom of solitude. An average English house combines all the curses of civilisation with the vicissitudes of life in the open. It is all right to have windows, but you must not have double windows because double windows would indeed stop the wind from blowing right into the room, and after all, you must be fair and give the wind a chance. It is all right to have central heating in an English home, except the bath room, because that is the only place where you are naked and wet at the same time, and you must give British germs a fair chance. The open fire is an accepted, indeed traditional institution. You sit in front of it and your face is hot whilst your back is cold. It is a fair compromise between two extremes and settles the problem of how to burn and catch cold at the same time. The fact that you may have a drink at five past six pm, but that it is a criminal offence to have it at five to six is an extremely wise compromise between two things (I do not quite know between what, certainly not between prohibition and licentiousness), achieving the great aim that nobody can get drunk between three o’clock and six o’clock in the afternoon unless he wants to and drinks at home … George Mikes, How to be a Brit © George Mikes/Penguin Books 1984	Translation - German Zu den grundlegenden Prinzipien und Tugenden der Briten gehört das Schließen kluger Kompromisse. Wenn ein Gemüsehändler auf dem europäischen Festland 14 Schillinge für einen Bund Radieschen verlangt, sein Kunde ihm 2 bietet und sie sich schließlich auf 6 Schillinge einigen, dann ist das bloß die niedere, kontinentaleuropäische Angewohnheit des Feilschens. Der Unterschied liegt darin, dass ersteres auf dem Festland praktiziert wird, letzteres in Großbritannien. Die Begabung zum Kompromiss hat auch noch einen anderen Aspekt. Sie neigt dazu, all das zu vereinen, was schlecht ist. Das Leben in englischen Clubs beispielsweise vereint die Belastungen des Gesellschaftslebens mit der Langeweile der Einsamkeit. Ein durchschnittliches englisches Haus verbindet alle Übel der Zivilisation mit den Launen der freien Natur. Man darf gerne Fenster haben, aber keinesfalls Doppelverglasung, denn Doppelverglasung würde den Wind ja wirklich davon abhalten, geradewegs ins Zimmer zu wehen, und der Wind verdient eine faire Chance. Man darf gerne Zentralheizung haben in einer englischen Wohnung, außer im Badezimmer, denn das ist der einzige Ort, an dem man gleichzeitig nackt und nass ist, und britische Krankheitserreger verdienen eine faire Chance. Ein offenes Kaminfeuer ist eine anerkannte, ja traditionelle Einrichtung. Man sitzt davor mit heißem Gesicht und gleichzeitig kaltem Rücken. Das ist ein fairer Kompromiss zwischen zwei Extremen und löst das Problem, wie man sich zur selben Zeit verbrennt und erkältet. Die Tatsache, dass man nachmittags um fünf nach sechs einen heben darf, dasselbe um fünf vor sechs jedoch eine Straftat darstellt, ist ein überaus kluger Kompromiss zwischen zwei Dingen (wobei mir nicht ganz klar ist zwischen welchen - sicherlich nicht zwischen Alkoholverbot und Zügellosigkeit), der den großartigen Zweck erfüllt, dass sich zwischen drei und sechs Uhr nachmittags niemand betrinkt, es sei denn, er will es und tut es zuhause...
