أنا صميم كاتب سري أشتغل باسم حركي .هو الرجل ذاته الذي قدم معها في العام ١٩٨٦ الى عيادتك الخاصة الكائنة في شارع جاسمان الحي السادس عشر. آمل ان لا تحبطك الذاكرة،وهي ، الآنسة عفاف . كانت تتقدم ببنيتها الرشيقة والقصيرة ،وبيدها لوحة مربعة من لوحاتها لكي تقدمها اليك بدون كلام، وطرب زوجتي ، النحاتة ، صديقتها و زميلتها في الاكاديمية .
ومعاذ الآلوسي صاحبي ومرشدي الهندسي، المعمار، الذي شغفت بتصميمه المبدئي ل- المكعب- فسجلت في كلية الهندسة وداومت لعامين، ثم غيرت مسارها بالانتقال الى أكاديمية الفنون الجميلة الكائنة في الوزيزية. هذا معاذ من الجائز أفسدها حين قال لها في أحد الايام،
سنصمم المكعب -معا - وندعو من نُغرم بهم اليه

Chapter One: First Snap of the Clapperboard

Much as in old photo albums, we the undersigned—the Ayoub A.L. family—gradually appear either standing together, or behind one another, or in front, or a little further off. We thought it better to let our mother Makiah sit on a chair, as she can’t stand for long, even if it’s for a photo. Beside her is Auntie Fatihiya, and then the younger auntie, Saneea. Our grandmother Bebe Fatim has no place among us; she stayed upstairs.
Good. As is preferable, and to preserve our reputation, we men stand behind them. I am the father Ayoub, and beside me is my brother Mukhtar. Here, it’s better that we leave a place for Hilal, our eldest son, and our daughter Afaf, whose case we assigned to Mr. Samim.
Come now, brother, take this responsibility off my shoulders, and let me go back to my place in the album.
Good. Now, just as I write your name, the shadow of Miss Afaf appears.
Dear Dr. Karl Falino,
I am Samim—or that was my working codename. I am the one who came with her, in 1986, to your private clinic on Jasmine Street in the Sixteenth Arrondissement.
I do hope your memory will not fail you as she, Miss Afaf, walked ahead of us with her short skinny frame. In her hand was one of her square paintings that she gifted you without a word. And there was my wife, Tarab, the sculptor, a friend of hers and a colleague at the academy.
There was also Maath Al Alousi, my friend and her engineering adviser, the architect, about whose initial design of the “Cube” she was so passionate, and who had been the reason she’d enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering, studying there two years before she changed her focus, moving to the Fine Arts Academy in Al Wazireya. This Maath might have ruined her when he told her one day:
“We’ll design the ‘Cube’ together, and we’ll invite those we fall in love with to come to it.”

Source text - Arabic سرح ذهن حجي حسين منصور في حبيبات الكهرمان بين أصابعه. إنها الهدية ا ثمن التي حصل عليها والتي، منذ أن أمسكها للمرة ا ولى، وهو يطبق عليها بأصابعه، إطباق الغريق على خشبة الخ ص. ينشد ا مان مع كل حبة تسقط في دفء راحته، تك تك، مصدرة ذلك الصوت الذي جعله يحلف لع ء وحجي أبو محمد، أنها ترياقه المخلص من آفة التدخين، قبل أن يعود إلى ذلك ا دمان بعد أربع سنوات طوال. ليت ا قدار تدار بهذه السهولة، أو ليتها تكون بهذا الجمال، تشع تحت الشمس وتلمع واضحة، كحبات مطر الذهب وقد جمد. أخرج حسين من جيبه علبة السجائر. ما زالت اللقمة الثقيلة عالقة في جوفه، منقوعة بالسموم التي تقيّأها أبو ذا النون. فتح العلبة ليجد لفافة بيضاء وحيدة تستلقي بهدوء في جوفها، كان قد أعدها بعناية هذا الصباح. تردد قلي ً، ثم أعاد العلبة إلى جيبه بعد أن قرر أنه سيؤجل احتراقها بضع دقائق، إلى حين لقائه بع ء. وضع يده على صدره، شاعراً بنار من أثر الدخان وبنار أكبر يطفئها إ الدخان.
Translation - English Hussein’s thoughts went to the amber beads between his fingers. In all his life, they were the most valuable gift he’d gotten. And since he’d received them, he’d held them between his fingers as a drowning man clutches a piece of wood, seeking safety each time a bead dropped onto his warm palm: tick, tick.
That sound, he’d thought, was the best medicine for giving up smoking, as he’d sworn to Alaa’ and Abu Ahmed. And yet it wasn’t—he’d gone back to his addiction after four long years.
He wished that the situation could change easily, that they could be like the sun’s golden sheen grazing the frozen raindrops. As he took the cigarette box from his pocket, he still felt the heaviness in his throat, which was filled with Abu Zanoun’s poisonous words.
He opened the box to find one single cigarette lying quietly at the bottom. He had carefully prepared it this morning. Now, he hesitated, then returned the box to his pocket after deciding he would postpone its burning for another few minutes, until he met with Alaa’. He put his hand over his chest, which was burning from the smoke, and from a larger fire—one that could only be burned out by another fire.
