Translation - English Helping my mother raise my very young niece and nephew has taught me the importance of selflessness. I have made a difference in the lives of those children the same way they’ve made a difference in mine.
My niece and nephew were once like orphans. But my mother decided to adopt them when no other relative would. My siblings and I babysat the children when my mother was away. I didn’t like giving up my free time for babysitting because I felt that it wasn’t my responsibility.
In my Japanese class, I watched the movie Kikujirou for the second time. At first I didn’t pay much attention to the characters but seeing it the second time made me think of how similar I am to Kikujirou and how similar my niece and nephew are to Masao.
Like my niece and nephew, the little boy Masao is being raised by his grandmother. During the summer break, Masao wants to go see his mother. Kikujirou, a friend of the grandmother, takes Masao to see her. At first, Kikujirou seems very selfish and foolish. He takes Masao’s money, gambles, and neglects Masao for sake. Kikujirou eventually finds Masao’s mother, but she is with her new family and she looks like she has forgotten all about Masao. Kikujirou starts to feel deep sympathy towards Masao. He can truly relate to Masao since he probably knows what it’s like to be without a real parent.
Similarly, my turning point was when I realized how my niece and nephew needed a true parent but didn’t have one. Like Kikujirou, I stopped being selfish and started being more compassionate towards my niece and nephew. Kikujirou and Masao’s relationship improves the way my relationship with my niece and nephew get better. Kikujirou and Masao enjoy an eventful road trip that helps Masao feel happy on their way back home. I started reading books with my niece and nephew, playing with them, and spending time with them. They have become my little brother and sister. I think about them more and more when they are not around. Now my niece and nephew are a part of me. Sometimes they look at me and say “I love you.”
I think of how compassionate Kikujirou was to Masao and I realize that everybody can learn so much from the caring nature of the Japanese people. The humbleness and kindness that Japan is founded on was portrayed in the film Kikujirou. After watching that film, I felt reassured in the fact that I had sacrificed to help my niece and nephew get through their hardships. Thanks to my niece and nephew, I was able to become a better person like Kikujirou did.
